Ex-Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has missed out on the Poland national team job.

Fernando Santos, who recently managed Portugal at the World Cup, has been appointed as the new head coach of the country,

Gerrard was linked with the role after it was announced that the Polish FA would not be renewing the contract of former boss Czeslaw Michniewicz.

"It is a great honour for because we are talking about a great country, with an extremely rich history and culture," Santos said after being appointed.

"Polish football also has a history that has marked my generation.

"The national team has many players of great quality, it is among the best in the world. From today I am a Pole, I am one of you."

The Englishman joined Aston Villa from Ibrox in October 2021 but lasted under a year before being sacked earlier this season due to a poor run of results.

Meanwhile, Todd Cantwell has praised the Ibrox support, calling them "powerful".

The midfielder recently signed for the Light Blues on a long-term deal from Norwich City.

And the 24-year-old has explained why he is excitied to get started as well as how Gers boss Michael Beale sold him on the move.

Speaking during his first press conference as a Light Blues player, he said: "Sometimes in life you need a fresh start. Norwich is a club I hold really close to my heart.

"When I spoke to Ross and the manager it was clear this was the club for me. The manager spoke in such detail about what he wanted from me.

"As a player, you want this clarity. Having a manager that believes in me and is building something is huge for me.

My fitness is good, I have been working hard even without the game time. It will take a little bit to get up to match speed but I am in a good place.

"To have this fanbase on my side will be really powerful for me. The important thing for me is to win silverware, you have to look at this as an opportunity to win trophies
