IT’S BEEN a dramatic international break for Rangers with the news that Steven Gerrard and the coaching team have departed for Aston Villa.

He leaves the champions sitting four points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership and heading into a League Cup semi-final with Hibs.

Since the last break for national team action, the Light Blues won three and drew two in the league and took four points from six in their Europa League double-header with Brondby.

But how have the players been performing? Well, it’s time to update the Rangers Review power rankings.

First, a wee explainer in case this is your first visit to the RR power rankings.

Subscribers will already know that we produce detailed man-by-man match ratings for every game, so international breaks seem the perfect time to collate those marks and put the results to you.

Like before, appearances from the bench not long enough to warrant a match rating of more than a two or three are removed from the tallies. Where two players have finished level in rating, the tie-breaker gives the nod to the player who has played more often.

And away we go...

18. Borna BARISIC

The Croatian props up the power rankings table and it’s unsurprising given his relatively poor campaign thus far.

He has struggled to recapture the form that saw him play a pivotal role in the club winning the title last season with his best display coming against Celtic back in August where he scored a 7.

Average rating 5.85 (out of 10)

17. John LUNDSTRAM

After a shaky start to his Rangers career, the former Sheffield United man appeared to be turning a corner after Man of the Match displays against Dundee and Hibs and performed well against Hearts and Brondby at Ibrox but his performance levels have dipped since. Rangers will need him back to his best with the run of fixtures coming up.

Rating 6.1

16. Scott ARFIELD

The 33-year-old has fought his way back into first-team contention recently and contributed to the thumping win over Motherwell and performed reasonably well in the Europa League draw away to Brondby. His return has been a welcome boost given Rangers have been accused of being a little stale this season, his late runs into the box and attacking prowess give opposition teams something to think about. Depending on who the new manager is, Arfield could play a key role in the round of fixtures.

Rating 6.14

15. Jon McLAUGHLIN

The Rangers No.2 has been more than an able deputy for Allan McGregor this season. He was pivotal in the Light Blues victory over Dundee at Dens Park when he saved Jason Cummings’ penalty and has performed well when called upon.

14. Allan McGREGOR

The veteran stopper has been performing steadily if not at the standard of last season. The only blip has been the error that resulted in Hearts snatching a point at Ibrox last month. He hasn’t had an awful lot to do as is the norm with Rangers goalkeepers but is still reliable when called into action. With a new manager set to be announced it will be interesting if he continues as the No.1 or whether McLaughlin or even Robby McCrorie will take over the mantle.

Rating 6.17

13. Fashion SAKALA

After a relatively uninspiring start to his Rangers career, the Zambian exploded into life at Fir Park a fortnight ago when he netted a hat-trick against Motherwell.

He was unplayable that day and showed just why he was brought to the club. The supporters are so infatuated they’ve created their own version of Shakira’s Waka Waka song in tribute to their new hero. He struggled against Brondby in Denmark but performed well in the recent win over Ross County at Ibrox. Expect him to play and contribute more going forward.

Rating 6.25

12. Leon BALOGUN

The big Nigerian has played a lot more than expected given the injury sustained by Filip Helander earlier in the campaign. He has performed reasonably well in the main alongside Connor Goldson although both centre backs have been at fault for basic errors in recent games. His own goal against Brondby was poor defensively from a positional sense and looked a tad out of sorts against Ross County.

Rating 6.29

11. Connor GOLDSON

The vice-captain has been relatively steady recently but, like Balogun, has been prone to defensive errors that have often resulted in goals. He was at fault for Aberdeen’s opener at Ibrox in the 2-2 draw and a mix up between him and James Tavernier resulted in Motherwell opening the scoring at Fir Park. Given the departure of Gerrard and his ongoing contract impasse, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him sign a pre-contract with another team come January or even move on.

Rating 6.3

10. Ryan KENT

Oh, how Rangers have missed this boy. After returning from a hamstring injury he was instrumental in helping secure a point against Brondby and carried this form into the Ross County clash where he scored what Gerrard described as a ‘worldie’. He is absolutely vital to this Rangers side and will have a huge part to play as they try to navigate the upcoming fixtures.

Rating 6.35

9. Alfredo MORELOS

The Colombian has been out of sorts this season, there have been questions raised over his sharpness and even weight. He’s only netted two goals since the last international break including his 100th Rangers goal against St Mirren. His performance away to Brondby was poor and he was dropped in the recent win over Ross County. Perhaps the time out the starting XI may do him good and a new manager may be able to get more of a tune out of him in what has been a rather dismal season for El Bufalo.

Rating 6.38

8. Steven DAVIS

The Northern Irishman’s form has been up and down since the previous international break, after quiet but effective showings against Brondby at Ibrox and St Mirren, he was back to his best in the 6-1 rout over Motherwell where he notched an assist with a perfectly weight ball to Sakala to net his hat-trick.

Rangers Review:

As much as he was on top of his game in Lanarkshire, he was off the pace in the trip to Brondby. With hints he may call time on his international career it will surely benefit Rangers going forward given he's in the latter stages of his playing days.

Rating 6.4

7. James TAVERNIER

The skipper had a nightmare in the 1-1 draw with Hearts at Ibrox and failed to track Scott Brown when the Aberdeen captain nodded the Dons 2-0 up but you can never knock Tavernier for hiding and he responded by providing an assist and scoring a penalty to salvage a point. He added to his long list of sensational goals with a peach of a volley against Motherwell, again showing great leadership following a defensive error that allowed the Steelmen to take the lead.

Claimed his 100th assist for the club against Ross County which is a staggering statistic and there will be many more to come but defensively he, like Goldson and Balogun, has been suspect on a number of occasions.

Rating 6.47

6. Glen KAMARA

Like many of the Rangers squad, Kamara’s form has been up and down. Since the previous international break, he produced a sublime display against Motherwell and capped it with a rare goal but in the main, he’s been effective yet relatively quiet. As can be seen in the graphic below, he needs to add more numbers to his game in an attacking sense, it’s something he and Gerrard alluded to in the past and the new manager coming in will surely demand more in an attacking sense.

Rating 6.5

Rangers Review:

5. Kemar ROOFE

It’s been a bit of a stop-start season for Roofe. As we all know fitness is often an issue with the Jamaican international and he isn’t used as much as supporters will no doubt want but when he does play, he generally produces.

Rangers Review:

Since the previous break, he netted the vital second in the 2-0 win over Brondby, scored from the spot in the comeback victory over St Mirren and scored the sixth goal in the thrashing of Motherwell, although Jack Simpson may still feel aggrieved he nicked it off him. On a serious note, however, given Morelos’ drop in form, Rangers need him firing on all cylinders. He’s scored three Premiership goals which is slightly underperforming given his xG rating of 4.15 but he’ll fancy his chances of adding to his goal tally during the run of fixtures approaching.

Rating 6.57

4. Joe ARIBO

The former Charlton man has arguably been Rangers most impressive player in recent weeks, he was awarded to 8 ratings against Brondby at Ibrox and Ross County and has been a consistent performer.

Like Kamara, he’s been tasked with adding more numbers to his game, he netted against the Staggies but given his talent he’s capable of producing more in front of goal.

Rating 6.57

3. Scott WRIGHT

It’s perhaps surprising to see Wright feature so highly on the list of top performers. His placing can be explained by his impressive showings earlier in the campaign. His performance levels have dipped considerably which have seen him afforded only fleeting substitute appearances of late. Needs to work on his end product and produce more in front of goal to earn more game time.

Rating 6.65

2. Calvin BASSEY

One of the few shining lights this season, Bassey has performed well when called upon, so much so he’s now the first choice left back for many supporters.

Rangers Review:

His delivery into the box is improving and his work rate and boundless energy is a joy to behold. Of course, he’s still miles away from the finished article but his development is encouraging.

Rating 6.7

1. Ianis HAGI

The Romanian has been Rangers’ most consistent performer this season and has popped up with vital contributions recently. He was the top performer in the comeback win over St Mirren and his goal earned a point away to Brondby in the Europa League. His interview following the stalemate spoke volumes about his winning mentality and frustration at the failure to take all three points: “It is a draw, we came here to win and we didn’t win,” he told BT Sport.

“Away from home, I know it is the Europa League, it is a tough competition, but we wanted to win.

“Our mentality should have been better from the beginning.

“We are Rangers and we have to come here and try to win, not wait until the second half to go out there and attack.”

That being said, he was unconvincing in the 2-2 draw with Aberdeen and his desire to overplay resulted in Ross County taking the lead last Sunday.

However, he recovered to help the team claim all three points and it’s this mentality and desire that sees him top the power rankings.
