It’s going to be far from easy for Giovanni van Bronckhorst to match the achievement of predecessor Steven Gerrard in getting to the last 16 of the Europa League once again.

German giants Borrusia Dortmund, complete with arguably the world’s best striker in Erling Haaland, will be extremely hard to navigate past.

They currently sit second in the Bundesliga table, six points behind perennial leaders Bayern Munich and four ahead of a Leverkusen side that defeated Celtic 4-0 at Parkhead earlier in the season.

There seems little doubt it’s going to be the biggest challenge of the Dutchman’s reign so far as he aims to go one better than his old boss Dick Advocaat who lost a penalty shoot out against the Germans nearly 22 years ago in the same competition.

Here's the instant reaction of some of the biggest pundits.

It’s going to be difficult for Rangers, home and away. We have spoken about the talented footballers they have. It used to be if you could hang in during the first leg but away goals are scrapped now anyway, so I don’t think that’s important anymore. Rangers are going to have to be at their best. Dortmund are flying at the top of the Bundesliga. They have shown in Europe over recent years the talents they have got and how good they are. With Rangers though, you just never know. There have been a few shocks and surprises over the last few years. I’m sure Giovanno van Bronckhorst and the players will be looking forward to it and won’t just want to make up the numbers. They will feel as if they can cause an upset. (told to Sky Sports)

Ibrox is the factor here, you need to go away and keep it tight. If ever a fanbase has been starved of these nights, it's the Rangers faithful and they will make a noise, they will make it a cauldron. The big problem is stopping Erling Haaland, some of the top defenders in the Bundesliga and Champions League haven't worked out how to do that. So van Bronckhorst, you've got to have a game plan, maybe stop the supply into him, suffocating at source. It's an intriguing tie, it's probably the most difficult tie they could have got but they will embrace it and it's going to be a fantastic night at Ibrox. Where is your club at the moment? I don't think Glasgow Rangers, with all due respect, expect to win this tournament. They have been unbelievable, Steven Gerrard was able to do a great job there, and van Bronckhorst has come in and hit the ground running. It's just about the occasion, if they do go out and beat Borussia Dortmund, with the great players they have got, these lads become even greater legends in the city and club. Glasgow Rangers are a few years away from competing at this level, because they have come from a low point over the last 10 years. But it's a fantastic club, a fantastic city, and European football is all the better for having Glasgow Rangers at this stage in the competition."

They gave a small chance. They have a chance but have to play on the fact that Ibrox is a fortress. There isn’t many grounds, even in the Premier League, like Celtic or Rangers and that is a fortress. So they have to stick in the tie and get something in Germany and then pull off the miracle at Ibrox. (told to BT Sport)

I’m sure the management staff and players are looking forward to it. But me personally, it was one of the teams I wanted to avoid. But for these guys it will be great to test themselves against these players. This is what they have been building and to see a team like Dortmund come to Ibrox under the lights, it’ll be special. (told to BT Sport)
