GIOVANNI van Bronckhorst has enjoyed a near-perfect start to life as Rangers boss since taking over the reins in November.

The Dutchman has won all seven Premiership matches to proudly sit six points clear at the top of the table as well as guiding the Ibrox giants into the knockout stages of the Europa League.

But how have the players been performing? Well, it’s time to update the Rangers Review power rankings.

First, a wee explainer in case this is your first visit to the RR power rankings.

Subscribers will already know that we produce detailed man-by-man match ratings for every game, so international breaks seem the perfect time to collate those marks and put the results to you.

Like before, appearances from the bench not long enough to warrant a match rating of more than a two or three are removed from the tallies. Where two players have finished level in rating, the tie-breaker gives the nod to the player who has played more often.

And away we go...

18. John LUNDSTRAM

Previous ranking: 17

The big summer signing from Sheffield United has fallen down the pecking order since the arrival of the new manager. So much so, it’s being reported he may depart Ibrox on loan to get regular game time. A handful of decent showings aside, the Liverpudlian has struggled to impose himself on this Rangers team. He has only started two games under van Bronckhorst, the dead rubber away to Lyon and the match against Dundee United when he was hooked at half time and it’s hard to see him getting much game time going forward.

Rating 6

17. Steven DAVIS

Previous ranking: 8

Similarly to Lundstram, Davis has found first team opportunities harder to come by under the new manager. There is a feeling this season could well by the Northern Irishman’s last in a light blue jersey but you sense he still has a role to play this campaign. He performed well in van Bronckhorst’s debut as Rangers defeated Sparta Prague at Ibrox but his other two displays against Hibs at Easter Road and Lyon were far from the vintage Davis that we all know.

Rating 6

16. Leon BALOGUN

Previous ranking: 12

The Nigerian has endured a frustrating spell on the sidelines of late. After limping off in the League Cup semi-final debacle to Hibs, he’s not been able to return to first team action. Fortunately for Rangers, he’s not been missed given the impressive form of Calvin Bassey. His recent injury also ruled him out of representing Nigeria at the AFCON so Rangers will be hoping he can get back to fitness to beef up the backline.

15. Borna BARISIC

Previous ranking: 18

The Croatian is one of a number of players whose performance levels have shot up since the managerial change. The 29-year-old looks more assured and back to his best which makes the recent £2 million bid from Watford seem all the more ridiculous. His delivery for Alfredo Morelos’ goal against St Mirren on Boxing Day was utterly sublime and Rangers will be hoping for plenty more deliveries like that heading into the second half of the campaign.

Rating 6.2

14. Scott ARFIELD

Previous ranking: 16

Like Barisic, Arfield is another player who’s enjoyed an upturn in form since van Bronckhorst took charge. He has worked his socks off to fight for his place and become an integral part of this Rangers side. He produced his best performance of the season in the 3-1 win over Livingston at the Tony Macaroni Arena and capped his display with an outstanding lob to open the scoring.

That being said he was virtually anonymous in his last run out against Dundee United but going forward you feel he has a huge part to play in the title run-in.

Rating 6.23

13. Jon McLAUGHLIN

Previous ranking: 15

The Rangers No.2 has only featured once under van Bronckhorst but produced a commanding display as the Light Blues claimed a 1-1 draw away to Lyon in their final Europa League group stage match. He’s one of a number of players out of contract in the summer and Rangers would be hard pressed to find another deputy goalkeeper as dependable as the Scotland international.

Rating 6.3

12. Allan McGREGOR

Previous ranking: 14

After calls earlier in the season questioning whether he still had the attributes to be Rangers No.1 McGregor has answered them of late.

The 39-year-old has only conceded one goal in his last eight games and has looked back to his best. Although often rarely called upon domestically, he has still managed to produce world-class saves, notably against Livingston (above) and a breathtaking double-stop to deny Sparta Prague what looked like certain goals and thus enabled Rangers to progress to the knockout stage of the Europa League.

Rating 6.32

11. Connor GOLDSON

Previous ranking: 11

Another player who deserves credit for an upturn in performance levels and for forming a robust partnership with Calvin Bassey that has seen the champions replicate last season’s defensive heroics of late. His contract situation still hasn’t been resolved and with talk of potential centre backs arriving in Govan, it may suggest his time at Rangers may be coming to an end but if he can continue in this vein between now and the end of the season then it bodes well in the quest for 56.

Rating 6.39

10. Fashion SAKALA

Previous ranking: 13

While the Zambian has struggled to hold down a regular first team place, he has contributed when called upon. Since the arrival of van Bronckhorst, he helped secure the three points with a goal against Livingston and also performed well against Dundee and Hearts. You expect there will be more to come from the 24-year-old in 2022.

9. Kemar ROOFE

Previous ranking: 5

The Jamaican international has had a frustrating time of it lately. He continues to be plagued by niggling injuries which has seen his first team opportunities limited. That being said, his contribution at Easter Road when he netted a late penalty may prove priceless this season. He was given a starting berth against Lyon but struggled to impose himself on the game and hasn’t started since.

Rating 6.5

8. James TAVERNIER

Previous ranking: 7

The skipper has been his usual reliable self in recent weeks. His role has been adapted slightly with the arrival of the new manager in a sense that he isn’t pushing forward as much as he would’ve done previously. His numbers are still mightily impressive and he’s still very much the driving force in this Rangers side.

Rating 6.55

7. Ianis HAGI

Previous ranking: 1

The Romanian has endured a bit of a frustrating start to life under van Bronckhorst. It’s clear he’s simply unable to perform on the right hand side of the front three to a high level. His lack of pace has been evident of late and his confidence appears to have taken a dent. He said following the win over Dundee United that he prefers to play more centrally but the problem is he isn’t dislodging Joe Aribo or Scott Arfield on current form. His numbers are down considerably on last season as can be seen in the radar below.

Rangers Review:

He’ll be hoping the break may have came at the right time to recharge the batteries and go again.

Rating 6.62

6. Alfredo MORELOS

Previous ranking: 9

The Colombian looks revitalised under van Bronckhorst. He looks leaner and sharper and the smile is back. He’s back on the scoring trail again with six goals in his last eight starts and that only bodes well going forward. He’s playing as that lead striker as opposed to coming deeper and featuring more in the build-up and his numbers have improved as a result.

Per 90, his touches in the box have increased from 10.49 to 14.21. His xG has also risen from 0.51 to 0.74 while his xG assisted has risen from 0.09 to 0.40.

His shot map from August to his final league game under Steven Gerrard saw him rack up an xG of 4.94 from 45 shots, returning four goals.

Rangers Review:

But since the arrival of van Bronckhorst, an xG of 4.97 has been attained through 37 shots and the same number of league goals returned. In three fewer matches.

5. Glen KAMARA

Previous ranking: 6

The Finn is another player who has impressed under van Bronckhorst although he had been enjoying a fairly decent season prior to the Dutchman’s arrival. One noticeable difference of late has been the way he’s moved back to form a back three on occasion when Rangers are defending, this has contributed to the number of clean sheets being posted and the general solidness we’re now witnessing at the back.

Rating 6.63

4. Ryan KENT

Previous ranking: 10

After an injury-plagued few months, Rangers have benefitted greatly with his return to fitness. He looks sharp and menacing and back to causing opposition defences all manner of problems. The only blight on his copybook is his lack of goals, with just two this season, it’ll no doubt be an aim to rack up more numbers going forward.

Rating 6.65

3. Scott WRIGHT

Previous ranking: 3

Has impressed in the last two outings where he came on at half time to change the game against a resolute Dundee United and a Man of the Match performance against St Mirren. With Hagi failing to impress on the right hand wing, the shirt is very much Wright’s to lose. He still has to work on his final ball but his displays under van Bronckhorst have been encouraging.

Rating 6.67

2. Joe ARIBO

Previous ranking: 4

The Nigerian’s game has reached all-new levels this year with performances that have alerted a number of English Premier League clubs to keep tabs on him. An absolute joy to watch at times, he has become Rangers’ talisman and is absolutely integral to everything the champions are looking to do. Under van Bronckhorst, he’s been played as a No.6, No.8 and No.10 and, if truth be told, he could play anywhere, he is simply an exceptional footballer.  He gets bums off seats, highlighted none more so than when he controlled the ball that appeared to have fallen from the Earth's atmosphere against St Johnstone.

He’ll be a huge loss for Rangers in the coming weeks as he takes part in the AFCON.

Rating 6.76

1. Calvin BASSEY

Previous ranking: 2

It’s unlikely anyone could have envisaged the former Leicester City kid becoming such a commanding figure at the heart of the defence. Since the injury sustained by Leon Balogun, Bassey has formed a watertight partnership with Connor Goldson and looks to be improving game by game. A real fans favourite, he’s quickly endeared himself to the Ibrox faithful and you can’t help but be excited at just how much better he can become. Rather surprisingly he wasn’t called up by Nigeria for the AFCON but their loss is most certainly Rangers’ gain.
