It's not too often transfer deadline day in Scotland offers the explosive so it was a shock today when reports began to circulate that Rangers were on the verge of signing Juventus' midfielder Aaron Ramsey.

And not just the profile of the transfer caught people off guard.

The Welsh international is reportedly on a whopping £400,000 a week salary in Turin.

He is undoubtedly the highest-profile transfer into our game in at least a decade.

Here's what various pundits had to say on the move that got everybody talking.

Barry Ferguson (on Go Radio)

“When it did come out earlier this afternoon, that was the first thought. We all know what he earns at Juventus and it would be impossible for Rangers to even pay a quarter of that salary.

“It’s an opportunity for Ramsey to play some football. I think he’s actually played more games for Wales than Juve.

“Rangers have obviously worked hard to get this deal in and when a player of this quality becomes available, you’ve got to try everything you can to get him in.

“He’s a player I’ve admired for a long time. He’s still got a lot of football in his legs and for me, Rangers have to get this deal done.

“Is it going to help Rangers win the league? If it gets over the line then certainly.

“If you look at the midfield area for Rangers, I think that’s their strongest point because you've got Kamara, Steven Davis who is out, Joe Aribo who for me has been Rangers’ best player this season and Scott Arfield.

“So there’s a lot of quality in there, but for me you can’t have too much quality and if Ramsey comes in, he’ll certainly help Rangers push for the title.”

Tam McManus (on The PLZ Football Show)

"I think it's boom or bust for Rangers this season.

"Everything is in that basket to win the league and get into that Champions League. That £40million kitty at the end of it would be huge, and give them a huge advantage over Celtic as well.

"Aaron Ramsey, from what I've heard from his agent Dave Baldwin, is that Rangers are paying next to nothing on that deal.

"I don't know how that has came about, but he said Juventus have had a bit of a nightmare.

"Fair play to Aaron Ramsey for coming to Rangers. I think he could of went to the English Premier League, but he's decided to go to Glasgow for a different challenge.

"He wants to test himself at Rangers, and it's a phenomenal signing."

Paul Merson (on Sky Sports)

“It’s brilliant news for Rangers, absolutely brilliant news. Bad news for Celtic.

“It just shows you how much those two teams have come on and how big they are that Aaron Ramsay at Juventus would go to Glasgow.

“His time in Italy was disappointing. He got behind the eight ball early doors and got an injury. When you get a move to a big big club like that you have to start well and it didn’t work out for him. He hasn’t got the opportunities.

“I’m very shocked there isn’t a lot of Premier League clubs aren’t in for him. Very shocked. He’s a midfield player that scores goals, a good player. I’m shocked that there isn’t more clubs in for him.”

Chris Sutton (on Twitter)

"I remember when Rangers thought they’d signed John Hartson… what happened next?"
