Rangers have guaranteed themselves a shot at Champions League play off glory by defeating Union tonight at Ibrox - but it's not the only reason to celebrate the victory.

It has emerged UEFA pays out €5m (£4.22m) to teams who get knocked out at the final hurdle before qualification to Europe's most elite competition.

While that's peanuts compared to the £40m plus that can be raked in from reaching the group stages proper, it's still a nice little boon to help soften the blow of dropping into the Europa League should they lose their tie against PSV Eindhoven.

Point 1.1 of a UEFA circular sent out to clubs in July states: "A total of €30m will be paid out to clubs involved in the UCL play-offs: clubs that are eliminated will each receive a fixed payment of €5m.

"The winners of the play-offs will not receive any specific payment for this round as they will receive payments for participating in the UCL group stage."

Rangers will face PSV at Ibrox next week in the first leg as they look to make the lucrative four-team group for the first time in over a decade.

They will hope to take a lead to Europe ahead of what's sure to be a difficult away tie in 13 days time.

The Dutch side are well known to Giovanni van Bronckhorst who previously managed Feyenoord in the Eredivisie.
