Rangers take a break from league action this evening as Dundee visit Ibrox in the League Cup quarter-final.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst can guide his team to Hampden with a win tonight having ended the long wait for domestic cup success last season.

“It's silverware and a trophy we can win so for me it's a very important domestic cup competition,” the manager said yesterday.

“When you are a manager or player at Rangers you win every competition you are involved in.”

Tonight’s tie should offer the manager an opportunity to rotate his squad with a heavy schedule to follow before the World Cup break. Our writers pick their teams below.

After Robby McCrorie signed a new deal recently, you’d envision cup games at home to be the perfect opportunity for minutes. While Jon McLaughlin is also in contention, if he’s not going to be the Rangers’ No.1 long-term then these games must be used as an opportunity to build up McCrorie’s game time.

Adam Devine should play in place of James Tavernier with Leon King and Ben Davies continuing at centre-back, more minutes will only aid the development of their relationship. Ridvan Yilmaz is surely destined to get a rare start at left-back.

James Sands will likely start and hand John Lundstram a rest as the team’s No.6 with Glen Kamara and Malik Tillman playing ahead of him.

On the flanks, Fashion Sakala could start from the right and Rabbi Matondo the left. Alfredo Morelos must be given some much-needed gametime in the middle.

Championship side Dundee are not to be underestimated but they do offer Rangers a chance to freshen up their team.

In goal, the choice between McLaughlin and McCrorie is one between the future and the past. It's time for the 24-year-old to be given a shot to prove his chops. The academy kid has never let the club down and has recently signed a long-term deal so his inclusion seems obvious.

In defence, slots for Devine and Yilmaz should offer a fresh alternative at full-back while a centre-back duo of King and Sands is youthful but solid.

In midfield, there aren't a power of options but Davis always provides a level of penetration from the base that others have failed to match. He may not have the legs of old, but the brain is sharp as ever. Tillman and Kamara can provide the legs and creativity with the Finn asked to push forward and win the ball high up the pitch whenever Dundee get possession. It's not his ideal position but with others running on empty, needs must.

A front three of Sakala, Roofe and Morelos is full of threat and goals and should ensure a night with few dangers for van Bronckhorst and his men. Roofe in particular has a big chance this season with the inside right slot favoured by the manager tailor-made for his talents. The only question is if he can stay fit enough to make the most of it.
