Former Rangers star Borna Barisic revealed he had Real Madrid superstar and countryman Luka Modric to thank for winning him a move to La Liga.

The Croatian international ended his unhappy spell in Turkey with Trabzonspor this week to join Leganes on loan, along with ex-Aberdeen hero Duk.

And 32-year-old Barisic admitted he was delighted to finally get a chance to play in Spain's top league at this stage of his career, after a chat with Modric, who turns 40 this year.

Barisic said: "I didn't do as well as I expected at Trabzonspor so this is a nice opportunity for me.

"I spoke with Luka Modric for advice. And he has helped me settle in at the club.

"It was an easy decision to come here. It happened on the last day of the transfer window, but when I spoke to the club officials I saw that they wanted me.

"I wanted to come to a quality La Liga team and the club seems like a family to me where everyone knows each other
