Nathan Oduwa quickly won over the hearts of Rangers fans back in 2015 after arriving from Spurs on loan.

The ungainly winger had exquisite technique and searing pace but surprisingly only lasted at Ibrox until the winter transfer window when he returned to London.

In a depressingly familiar Scottish football snapshot, a rainbow flick late on in a 5-1 win over Alloa was met with consternation rather than appreciation.

Wasps defender Colin Hamilton complained: “He’s come up here and he’s trying to show off, trying to make a name for himself. What can you do? I felt as if he was taking the p***.”

Former teammate Martyn Waghorn has told how the winger, who is now turning out in Azerbaijan with Keshla, lost his confidence amid the pasting he took in the media.

Waghorn said: “Nathan was a very gifted footballer with a lot of skills. He was very direct.

“To be honest, he lost a bit of confidence. There was one game when he did a rainbow flick and he got a lot of stick for that from the press around Scotland.

“That affected him.

"Afterwards, he was a bit more reluctant to showcase what he could do.

“For me, he was just having fun. He was a kid on loan, coming to a big club and looking to express himself. That’s what the manager wanted from him, to showcase his talent.

“It was a bit difficult for a kid coming to a new place and having a lot of people on him for being who he was I think was a bit harsh and wasn’t fair.”
