Nine years ago Ally McCoist was taking Rangers to face East Stirling in the fourth tier of Scottish football as manager.

Charles Green was in charge of the business and the club had a collection of SPFL journeymen and youngsters in the team.

So it's no wonder then the 355 goal legend's voice cracked with emotion as he was asked to sum up what Rangers win over Leipzig - a result that puts them in the Europa League final - means for the club.

McCoist was audibly moved as he delivered the perfect response that, if social media is anything to go by, resonated with fans far and wide.

He said: "I can't tell you how proud I am of that team, of those players, the fans, everything about tonight.

"I have been fortunate enough to come to this place and I've seen victories over Bayern Munich, over Dynamo Kiev, over Leeds United where the atmosphere has been the best, the best.

"That performance tonight will take some beating. Lundstram, Bassey. To a man, every one of them should be so proud of themselves. 

"Nine years ago we were playing East Stirling in the third division and now we are in a European final!"
