Rangers' sporting director, Ross Wilson had detailed how the 'strong relationship' between Connor Goldson and key figures at the club lead to the defender's new four-year deal.

The vice-captain had been widely expected to depart Govan at the end of his contract this summer with interest from Nottingham Forrest, Bournemouth and Turkish champions Trabzonspor all mooted.

But the former Brighton star has now committed to another four years in Scotland in a move that will delight the fans.

The stopper's leadership has been a crucial factor in the club's resurgence that saw them win a 55th league title and reach the final of the Europa League.

And Wilson stressed his happiness at securing the deal, which is understood to be within the club's strict wage structure.

He said: “Connor is an important player in our group and we are delighted that following all of our discussions, he has decided to commit his long-term future to Rangers.

“We have a strong relationship with Connor and we were always aware that this decision was a really important one for Connor and his young family, and we were prepared to respect the time for him to make the right decision for all concerned.

“I know how strong his feeling is for Rangers and we look forward to continuing the journey with him. With Connor committing his future and John Souttar also officially joining Rangers today we have assembled a strong defensive unit.”
