RANGERS boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst spoke to the Rangers Review following the pre-season friendly with Sunderland which was abandoned due to a power outage.

Here is everything he had to say.

What a night?

Of course, you want to play a game, you want to give minutes to all your players to get stronger. Once the lights broke, you wait and wait and you keep on waiting and then you get the news that they don’t have much hope that the lights will be working properly. I think we were out for one hour and it’s too much risk for us to play. I have players who’re in their first week so a one-hour break and to play on is not ideal so we took the decision to not play. At first, we said, ‘Ok, we’ll wait 15 minutes,’ then it became 30 and 45. It’s not ideal but after such a long delay you go into dangerous zones.

What can you take from the first 45 minutes?

For Antonio [Colak] it was the first time he’s played with his new teammates. I think he was strong up front. He got some good moments where we could play through him but it’s good that he played for 45 minutes. I have a lot of players who have another 45 minutes but we need to get stronger. We’ve got more players coming in, Calvin [Bassey] is back.

Will you try and arrange another game?

No, because I cannot use the players who played today. I only have 12 players so we will have a good session tomorrow with all the players who didn’t play and then we have everyone on board on Monday going back. Of course, we wished we had played 90 minutes but in the end, I think we made a smart decision.

Rangers Review:

Is Rabbi Matondo close to signing for you?

Ross [Wilson] is busy. We want to add more players to our squad. He’s busy with talking to players, talking with agents and clubs. You have so many people involved in those talks so I’m hopeful he can add new players in the coming week.

The midfielder Fulgini from France as well?

As I said, we are busy. We have several players we are watching and talking with but eventually when it’s 100% we will communicate.

John Souttar and Ryan Jack were not in the squad tonight, do they have any niggling injury issues?

No, John had to have some buttons pulled out of his ankle. It’s nothing serious. He will start this week in training and Ryan, of course, had an injury with his calf. He trained already this week and we are managing his load but he will be training with the squad as well next week.

Apart from the game have you been satisfied with how the week has gone?

Very much. It’s always difficult the first weeks of pre-season because we started with a lot of youngsters. Now, gradually we’re getting new players in and internationals are coming back. Always the first week you don’t have the full picture because you have new players having to settle in, international players cannot start straight away. Everyone has different levels of fitness so eventually in the next week to 10 days I think we will have everyone fresh and fully fit to play.
