RANGERS boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst lauded the instant impact of summer signings Rabbi Matondo and Tom Lawrence after his side's 3-1 win over West Ham in a pre-season friendly at Ibrox.

Here is what the Dutchman had to say on the victory, the influence of the goalscoring duo and the capture of Ben Davies.

What did you make of the game, especially Rabbi Matondo and Tom Lawrence’s cameo performances?

We can take a lot of positives from tonight against a strong opponent. Physically, we had to be there in terms of the intensity. The new players, it was their first time at Ibrox, and they had a really positive impact on the team. We scored three excellent goals. I’m really happy because everyone is working hard to get their qualities into the team. We still have some games to go, everything needs to be in line for the first game against Livingston. It’s been going really well so far.

The left-hand side of the defence really stood out – James Sands and now with Ben Davies arriving, it must be good to have those options?

We have added some players in the defence this summer – Ben Davies and John Souttar. James [Sands] can play there as well and he had some really good performances last season. We have a big squad and I’m happy with the competition. It makes it harder for me! I’m happy with everyone’s energy and effort they give when they get onto the pitch.

You used Glen Kamara in a role higher up the pitch – is that somewhere you envisage playing him more this season?

He’s played there a lot, we have so many options in midfield. In the second half Glen dropped down into midfield when Tom came on. Scott Arfield can play there, Malik Tillman is also comfortable in those areas. It’s good to welcome new faces this season. Everyone is excited for the new season. We’ll keep working hard over the next ten days for when the league campaign starts against Livingston. It starts really quick because we also have the Champions League qualifiers to come.

What’s the latest on Alfredo Morelos and Kemar Roofe’s fitness?

Hopefully we get Alfredo back in a couple of weeks. He’ll be back quicker than Kemar. Last season I had no fit strikers, but hopefully the other two can join Antonio [Colak] in being available for selection.

You spoke about adding ‘numbers’ in attack when Matondo and Lawrence arrived, you must be delighted at seeing that immediately?

We need goals, scoring a lot of goals makes it so much easier on the team. Last season we had some games where we didn’t extend the lead enough to be comfortable and we were punished at the end of the game. It’s something we need to do better this season. Both Rabbi and Tom are comfortable infront of goal, and it’s those qualities they have to give to the squad.

With Borna Barisic being the only left-back remaining in the squad, is that a position you’re keen to strengthen going forward?

Now we only have Borna, last season we also had Calvin [Bassey] who could play in that position. Borna’s performances have been really good. We must see what will happen in the coming weeks. We also have Adam Devine whose development is going in the right direction, Leon King can play there too.

We saw the team building up from the back today – is that something we’ll see a lot more of this season, especially with Jon McLaughlin being comfortable with the ball at his feet?

Allan [McGregor] is also comfortable with the ball at his feet. Especially when you get pressed really quick and when you’re brave on the ball. Once you surpass that press, the whole pitch is open. Instead of playing long, sometimes you need the bravery to pass to your teammates. The goals we scored were all about that – building from the back and making sure the opponent is stretched. Then you will find the pockets like Tom did, also with the speed we have with Rabbi and Ryan [Kent]. We can be very dangerous.

You were conservative with the number of substitutions, is that something you will also adopt against Tottenham this weekend?

The players are getting fitter now so we can use them longer. Also, the closer you get to the most important fixture – Livingston away – you work towards the team that you’ll start with. Everyone is showing their qualities. It’s quite a puzzle for the next ten days to get the line-up. They have to make it difficult for me to choose my starting 11.

How delighted are you to complete the signing of Ben Davies? What qualities will he bring to the team?

He’s a left-footed defender, which is important for the build-up. He’s comfortable, a good passer, reads the game well, and is a good defender. His time at Liverpool didn’t work out like he wanted. He’s very excited to start his new career at Rangers. He will add his qualities to the squad. Maybe he can have some minutes this weekend. We have Tottenham on Saturday, but we also have Queen’s Park on Sunday.
