Every word Giovanni van Bronckhorst said to Sky after the match against Livingston.

What did you make of the game?

In the end we are really happy with the points. The start of the game wasn’t good from our side. We didn’t look sharp with the goal agaisnt us and it took us out of the game. We didn’t play our normal game in the first half when we had the ball. We didn’t take the right position or attack the right zones in the right moments. Second half we did much better and created a lot of chances to score. In the end I’m happy with the two goals scored because it means we have three vital points in the first game of the season.

Were you surprised by that first-half performance?

We knew the danger they have with the big striker up front who can make it difficult. We said we’d have to be ready for the duels and especially, the second ball. It can’t be when we don’t have any player making contact with the ball and trying to win the duel. The full-back could win the ball without any pressure. It’s impossible and then the ball fell in behind and we were not good enough in anticipating that ball. A great goal for their side but impossible for us to give a goal like this away.

Was it key that there was a sense of urgency in the second half?

We changed a little bit in terms of personnel in the second half with three players behind Antonio to get more bodies in the box. I think the subs today gave the right energy and the right moments which helped us in the second half in creating a lot of chances. So really happy with the win.

What did you make of the offside goal?

Well, the ref makes his decision. If he counts the goal or not it’s his decision. Of course with VAR you will have the help so I can’t complain about that. There was one tackle that was maybe a second yellow but it’s all in the game where you have to accept the decisions of the referee and linesman and play on. We had to concentrate on our game because we had to dig deep today.

Was it key to be patient?

The goal Antonio scored helped us even though it didn’t count. It gave us the belief to keep pushing and I think we scored some great goals. I’m really happy with the goals from Tav and Scotty who came on and scored a vital equalizer. First half we didn’t play well and conceded the goal very, very easily but in the second half we saw the team I like to see, creating chances and dominating the game

Did the way you finished set you up well for Tuesday night?

Of course. It’s always good to start with a win and you need them when you start the season. We are now concentraing on a big game in Belgium and there will be two days of preparation for that so we have to use every hour we have to make sure we are ready.
