ALLY MCCOIST reckons Allan McGregor is still the best goalkeeper at Rangers as he offered his verdict on the "strange" Ibrox No1 scenario.

The Ibrox favourite revealed his opinion that McGregor is still the top choice for him personally in goal - but Giovanni van Bronckhorst has favoured Jon McLaughlin.

There were major calls for a switch in goal ahead of tonight's Champions League clash against Ajaz after McLaughlin's nightmare showing against Celtic at the weekend.

But Van Bronckhorst has stuck with McLaughlin as his No1. For McCoist it's a perplexing scenario as he insisted McGregor is the "best option" at the club currently.

Speaking on BT Sport, McCoist explained: "It's a strange one. I got asked the question at the weekend regarding the goalkeeping situation.

"Jon McLaughlin is a good goalkeeper but I still feel that McGregor is the best option that Rangers have.

"I've got to be honest; I don't see them in training day in day out, however, McLaughlin had a poor game at the weekend and it's easy right now to jump on the bandwagon and say he shouldn't be playing tonight.

"I still believe - even before the weekend - I know McLaughlin is a good goalkeeper but I still think the best option for Rangers at this moment in time would be Allan McGregor."

And Kenny Miller was in total agreement over the goalkeeping dilemma as he questioned whether Rangers had their strongest team on the pitch without McGregor.

The ex-Rangers striker echoed McCoist's comments on McLaughlin being a good keeper, but similarly agreed that McGregor should be the No1.

He added: "He's made good saves in good moments of games but I tend to agree with Ally and a lot of Rangers fans for that matter as well.

"When you are picking a team I feel at the moment maybe Rangers don't have their best team on the field of play because Allan McGregor is sitting on the bench.

"That's no disrespect to Jon McLaughlin, I just think Allan McGregor over the years has proven his worth particularly on these big stages."
