One man who knows exactly what it takes to win at Rangers is backing Michael Beale to topple Celtic this season.

In a trophy-laden seven-year stint at Ibrox, Stuart Munro won four league titles and four League Cups and was part of the Graeme Souness-led revolution that would begin a decade of dominance in Scottish football.

And despite finishing second to their arch-rivals in the previous two campaigns, Munro is confident for the upcoming campaign. “I think we’re all optimistic,” he told the Rangers Review.

“At the end of the day, it would’ve been worse if we had sat on our hands and didn’t do anything. Michael Beale’s came in and he’s been a breath of fresh air.

“He was unfortunate in that he probably didn’t have enough time to turn things around last season but all said and done we weren’t anywhere near being good enough last year to be successful and to win championships.

“Obviously Celtic were very good but there’s been a lot of change with us and a lot of change at Celtic but we’re not worried about what goes on, on the other side, it’s what we do and Michael Beale’s done that.

“He’s signed players and he’s going to continue to sign players. How successful they’re going to be, we don’t really know. We’re at a certain level where we sign players, we can’t go out and spend 10 or 20 million on players so we’ve got to be very clever and I think that’s what he’s done.

“We can only judge him on his first couple of signings with Cantwell and Raskin and how successful they look as if they’re going to be and the long-term proof will be in bringing in titles and cups.

“I think we’re going to see a different Rangers next year. Even the style he’s playing, the good thing is they’re doing a lot on the attacking side of the game and he still wants to add more attacking options to the team.

“I think anyone would say that’s what we need to do, we need more goals and we need to be exciting, we need to play that attacking brand of football and not waste time with trying to create opportunities to score goals, that’s what the supporters want to see.

“We should be good enough to go out all guns blazing against most teams in the Premiership and get over the line against them so I’m hoping to see that this year.”

A stalwart left-back in his Ibrox days, Munro competed with several players for a first-team place and saw off competition from the likes of Jimmy Phillips, Avi Cohen, Tom Cowan, and Chris Vinnicombe.

With Ridvan Yilmaz competing with Borna Barisic for the position, Munro has backed the Turk to take over from the Croatian as first choice left-back. “They spent a lot of money on Ridvan, it’s a lot of money for a left full-back, he was five or six million whereas I was £15,000,” he joked.

“I don’t know if the price tag is putting him under any pressure but he certainly looks a very capable player and he probably just needs an opportunity and game time to get himself in there.”
