Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony has expressed his delight at the role his club has had to play in the development of new Rangers signing Emmanuel Fernandez.

Gers yesterday confirmed the capture of the centre-back, 23, from the English League one side, their second signing of the day after Joe Rothwell headed north from Bournemouth. Both were added on permanent deals for undisclosed fees.

The Posh signed Fernandez for nothing from non-league Ramsgate in 2021 and eased him in with sporadic appearances and some loans before becoming a regular last season. It's believed Gers have now paid seven figures for him and will provide him with the platform to play European football.

MacAnthony is thrilled with his progress and says it is evidence that his club is the best place for young players to go and develop despite apparently being "written off" in recent years. They have just finished bottom half in the third tier with a very young squad.

The Irishman wrote on social media: "Delighted to play a part taking a young man for £0, let our wonderful coaches do their thing, the club have an awful season winning another trophy & see him end up at a champions league club in another blockbuster deal.

"Another message to all young talent out there & their agents that regardless of recent ‘short term’ sentiment re us being written off - Peterborough is the place to come & has been for many years."
