Youssef Chermiti is starting to show why Rangers brought him to the club and invested heavily to do so.
The summer signing was much maligned at the start of the season after his move from Everton for an initial £8 million, plus potential add-ons. However, his form has gradually improved and his double against Celtic was an undoubted high point, as well as offering fans hope he can be the No.9 they need.
Former Ibrox midfielder Charlie Adam worked with the frontman during a stint coaching at Goodison Park and always knew he had the ability. He feels that the player has just taken time to adapt to life at Rangers, and also has been feelig the burden of his price tag.
However, the pace and power possessed by Chermiti mean he has the raw attributes, if he can work on his link-up play and finishing.
Adam said: "If you’re buying a young Portuguese U21 player who is on the periphery of their national team - of course, £8 million is a lot of money. But that’s because no-one in Scotland really pays £8 million.
“If that was in England, if you paid that for a player like him, no-one would bat an eyelid. Because it’s Scotland and it’s Rangers, who haven’t spent as much as this in previous years, everyone questions it.
“And when you don’t hit the ground running, the price tag becomes an issue. People immediately think, you’re not going to get that back. But I see good attributes in Youssef. He’s got good power and pace.
"Can he improve in terms of his link up play? Absolutely. But he’s got an understanding that he needs to learn it. He’s one who comes in every day with a smile on his face. He enjoys it and wants to stay behind on the training pitch.

“He wants to learn and get better. Those are the investments you want to make. From a human side, he’s a brilliant lad. He’ll be a positive person within the group at Rangers and that’s me just going on the five months that I worked with him.
“He’ll be key in terms of the spirit at the club. I can see he’s already got good relationships with other players there. So I think there will be a positive outcome with Youssef and Rangers.
“He’s not scoring the amount of goals that everyone wants him to, so he’s got work to do on that. But in the long-term, he’ll be a good signing for Rangers."
Rangers have already spent money on midfielder Tochi Chukwuani and left-back Tuur Rommens in this window and secured a loan-to-buy for Andreas Skov Olsen, who could cost £9m.
However, Adam reckons it would make sense for them to also go for a prolific striker, which would also help Chermiti.
He added: "Getting a goalscorer in would be massive for them because I think it would take the load of Chermiti. I know Youssef after I coached him at Everton so I've been around him.
“Long-term, I think he’ll be a good signing for Rangers. But looking at him now, there’s a pressure of playing at the Old Firm which is huge.
“When you’re a number nine, it’s difficult to be that main goalscorer. So much pressure comes with that and you have to understand it.
“If you don’t score goals, the rest of your game must be spot on. It has taken Youssef time to get up to speed but it can be difficult coming into this league.
“The goals against Celtic have helped him but Rangers still need more players at the top end of the pitch who can contribute.
“They need players to score more goals, which can elevate them to the top of the league."
