Danny Rohl says he still retains full trust in Youssef Chermiti - and believes that giving him 'belief and trust' is how the 21-year-old will continue to improve.

Chermiti missed a one-on-one chance against Motherwell at Fir Park on Wednesday when his side were leading the game by a goal.

Hitting Callum Ward instead of one of the corners, the attacker's squandered chance proved costly when 10-man Motherwell levelled the game through Stephen Welsh late on. It leaves Rangers five points behind Hearts in the title race ahead of Sunday's meeting between the two teams.

Chermiti suffered a difficult start to life at Ibrox following a high-profile £8million move from Everton in the summer before improving under Rohl. Although a matchwinner in the New Year Old Firm, scoring two second-half goals in a 3-1 win, Rangers and Rohl haven't seen the No.9 score in the month since.

Rohl said on that missed chance in Lanarkshire, asked about getting the best from his Portuguese forward: "You give him belief and trust. You can imagine for Youssef, it's tough for him. Not about the reaction or something like this, it's more about how he feels. He knows exactly that he wants to score.

"Even in this game, for me, he wants a lot for the group. He comes into a good situation [for the one-on-one]. I wish that the next time he takes an extra touch and then he looks for the corner and he makes it.

"But it [will come], I totally believe, because I see a lot of things in him. It's again the small moments, and it comes not just when you think, ‘Should I shoot or not?’ No, it's about hard work again, try your best, come again in situations, and then we celebrate him.

"It was the Celtic game when he scored; he turned the game with fantastic goals, and he can do this again, I believe, totally."

Asked about whether it is fair that the striker is held to a higher standard given the fee paid for him, Rohl continued: "Fair or not, I think for us it's about a good performance on the pitch. In general, this is absolutely my part; I give my players a good mirror. After one game or two games, for me, it's not always black or white; it's always about managing my players, giving them this trust again and again.

"Working with them, giving them solutions, bringing them to the next level. In the last weeks, we brought a lot of players to the next level; this is important."
