Jon McLaughlin: When called upon he was dependable and could do little for the goal. 6

James Tavernier: Good early defending to cover Goldson with a header, offensively he was consistent as usual and came extremely close with a free-kick. Also saw a shot turned away by Siegrist. Always demanded the ball and drove his team forward. 7

Connor Goldson: He gave away possession early which led to a United attack, but equally played some fantastic switches of play to progress Rangers up the pitch. So unfortunate to not score with a towering header 20 minutes from the end. 6

Filip Helander: Strong defensively, and as ever intelligent at using his body in one-on-one situations. He helped his team to maintain pressure at the start of the second half well. 6

Borna Barisic: Struggled at times against young Logan Chalmers in the first half. His delivery was top quality without recipients at times but as Rangers chased a winner his influence waned somewhat. 6

Steven Davis: Crucial to Rangers with the ball as we know, but in a difficult opening he protected the defence superbly. He consistently anticipated danger and offered an out ball in all game situations. But like the rest of his team, he was slightly below usual par. 6

John Lundstram: Is naturally still adapting to this system, but didn’t have a good match. Made a couple of strong forward runs with the ball but also was too slack in possession and slowed the game down. Lost Jamie Robson for United’s opener and also gave away the ball as Connor Goldson took a tactical yellow. 5

Glen Kamara: Playing in a three-man midfield, he had the license to go forward, but also didn’t have much room with which to operate in. Too slow with a shooting opportunity as Rangers chased a goal. 6

Joe Aribo: Fielded slightly further forward than usual. He should have been more clinical when free in the box, but tried to slip in Kent and allowed a turnover. As ever when one-on-one, he produced some mesmerising quick feet. Didn’t impact the game enough. 6

Ryan Kent: Had a very quiet first half and dropped to get on the ball too often. Clipped a lovely ball to Morelos in a rare moment of incision. But for the most part, it was a game where little came off for him. Too often he earned space but chose to try and beat his man again. 5

Alfredo Morelos: Looked sharp for being thrown in, he should have done better with an early chance that flashed over and was unfortunate with a couple of headers. Wasn’t quite as involved as is common in the build-up and did seem to tire in the second half. 6

Subs: Scott Wright: Came on early in the second period and helped move the ball quicker down the right flank, but he had little space to work in. 6

Cedric Itten: Didn’t manage to hold the ball up after coming on. Tended to drift either side of Defoe or Morelos and struggled to get into the game. 4

Jermain Defoe: The player-coach had no service to offer any sort of threat. 4
