Our writers mull over Rangers' potential starting XI to face Malmo at Ibrox in the 2nd leg of their Champions League 3rd round qualifying tie.

The good news for Rangers supporters is that, suspensions aside, Steven Gerrard has almost a full squad to choose from tomorrow.

While Glen Kamara in particular remains a significant loss in a game of this magnitude, the option to field Joe Aribo will offer some variation in midfield selection.

Similarly, Ianis Hagi and Alfredo Morelos adds weight to a forward line that underfired in both matches last week.

Allan McGregor will of course come back in between the sticks, and although Leon Balogun has been favoured in plenty of home matches that Rangers need to win to allow the defence to push high, I predict Fil Helander will partner Connor Goldson. After all, Gerrard branded his performance “Champions League level” last week.

Moving into the midfield, it seems likely Joe Aribo will start on the left of the midfield three. When Scott Arfield played that role last week, it left the Ibrox side slightly unbalanced. Aribo often fills that role in domestic competition and is well accustomed to playing alongside Kent and Barisic. I fancy Arfield to return to a more familiar role to the right of Steven Davis.

Finally the forward line. Morelos may not have looked totally fit on Saturday, but I think he will be given the nod. We all know how much he thrives on these occasions – I’d rather he starts and be replaced around 60 minutes or so if necessary. The returning Hagi completes the front three in my mind. He can provide a link that was missing between midfield and attack on Tuesday.

Predicted line-up: McGregor, Tavernier, Goldson, Helander, Barisic, Arfield, Davis, Aribo, Hagi, Morelos, Kent

The return of Ianis Hagi is hugely positive for Rangers.

They were crying out for the Romanian in the previous two matches against Dundee United and last week's Malmo encounter.  He can unlock the meanest of defences with a moment of brilliance.  He often splits opinion amongst fans with many questioning his overall work rate but his contribution to the team cannot be underestimated.

For me, if fit enough to start, the Romanian should start, he offers creativity that not many can deliver and against a Malmo side who are protecting a slender goal advantage, he is the ideal man to call upon to help Rangers overcome that.

Leon Balogun returning to the squad is an interesting one.  Does he come in to replace Filip Helander who was probably one of Rangers better performers in Sweden last week?

Personally, I’d be inclined to keep Helander in the starting XI but it wouldn’t surprise me to see Balogun line up alongside Goldson given he has slightly more pace.

Fashion Sakala was a notable omission from the squad on Saturday due to a reported minor injury, it will be intriguing to see if Gerrard starts the Zambian, sticks with Cedric Itten who played in the first leg or elects to keep Alfredo Morelos as the main man up front.

El Bufalo is the likeliest to get the nod you’d imagine given his track record in European competition despite his lack of game time.

I'd fully expect Allan McGregor to return between the sticks and the only other possible conundrum is whether the manager starts with John Lundstram or Scott Arfield.  I don't think he can afford to play both given the need for goals so I'm plumping for Arfield to get the nod beside Davis.

Predicted line up: McGregor, Tavernier, Barisic, Goldson, Helander, Davis, Arfield, Aribo, Hagi, Kent, Morelos.

Rangers Review:

For a game of such magnitude, it's hard to imagine Rangers going for anything other than their tried and tested.

I expect Leon Balogun to come in to add recovery pace to the back line. As Rangers push for the goals they need to win the game, his mobility and fleet of foot will be important.

In midfield, options are still slightly scant, with Kamara suspended and Jack still injured.

It's a big night for John Lundstram who will currently be reckoning with life at a truly giant club. He's been at least partly culpable for two of the three goals conceded in recent games but he's also showed flashes of the muscularity that he was signed to provide. If he could turn in a good performance here it would go a long way towards helping him have breathing space to settle.

Alfredo Morelos may not be at his sharpest but his nose for goal at this level makes him a must pick. Let's hope he's chomping at the bit to show what he can do on another big night for the club because without him, Rangers are a less dangerous animal.

Predicted line-up: McGregor, Tavernier, Barisic, Goldson, Balogun, Lundstram, Davis, Aribo, Hagi, Kent, Morelos
