Joe Aribo's first-half goal gave the visitors a platform they clung onto for the remainder of the match, thanks to Jon McLaughlin's penalty save.
Connor Goldson had been caught on the wrong side of Paul McMullan before the Rangers' keeper fouled the Dundee player.
Steven Gerrard's side remains top of the Scottish Premiership, but their defensive performances remain a concern.
