ALLAN McGREGOR: Poor distribution on five minutes as he fired a ball out of play that was meant for Barisic but was called into action four minutes later with an acrobatic save to deny Pesek. Great save with his feet to deny Minchev on 25 minutes. Could do nothing with the opening goal, if anything he did well to claw it out but it had already crossed the line. Saved Rangers from a second goal on 56 minutes as Sparta found themselves through on goal for the third time in the opening 11 minutes of the second half. Saved well from Pesek on 87 minutes. 8

JAMES TAVERNIER: Gave away possession sloppily on 25 minutes that resulted in a breakaway and a shot from Minchev that McGregor did well to save. Positioning was all over the shop on 56 minutes as Pesek was allowed to run in on goal. The gaps between him and Balogun were noticeable on a number of occasions. Good positive run on 89 minutes but his cutback couldn't find a blue jersey. 5

LEON BALOGUN: Perhaps could’ve done better when connecting to a Davis cross on 16 minutes but failed to head on target. Positioning was off at times and slipped on 48 minutes which allowed Pesek a chance to bear down on goal but he failed to punish the mistake. He and Bassey struggled to strike up any chemistry but luckily for them, both Sparta failed to punish their faults. 5

CALVIN BASSEY: A centre-half role for the 21-year-old tonight following the omission of Connor Goldson, one of his main weak points is his ability to time headers and he often struggled with the flight of the ball. He was caught on his heels for the opening goal as Hancko headed past McGregor, although it was a brilliant effort. A slip on nine minutes almost proved costly as it allowed a shot to come in from Pesek but McGregor was on hand to deny the Czech. He was all over the place in the opening seconds of the second half as Sparta found themselves in on goal, luckily they failed to capitalise. A real baptism for Bassey whose only other centre-half appearance came against Falkirk in the League Cup last season. Steven Gerrard will be hoping Goldson is back asap. 5

BORNA BARISIC: Fantastic delivery from a free kick on 33 minutes but no takers in the penalty area and again around the 75-minute mark. That aside the Croatian had a generally quiet evening, defensively wasn’t overly troubled but likewise never really produced enough going forward. 6

STEVEN DAVIS: Great cross onto the head of Balogun on 16 minutes but he couldn’t hit the target. Poor pass behind Hagi as Rangers were looking to carve an opening on 88 minutes. A quiet evening in the main. 6

JOE ARIBO: Looked in the mood from the off, played in a great ball inside to Sakala to have a shot on goal on 13 minutes and showed great feet in the opening stages causing Sparta problems down the right-hand side. Had a header that looked goal-bound that was blocked on 16 minutes. Faded in the second half and was substituted on 77 minutes. 6

JUNINHO BACUNA: A surprise inclusion for his first start for the club and started pretty quietly but was involved in a great passing move with Aribo and Kamara on 27 minutes. Substituted after just 37 minutes with what looked like a thigh injury and was replaced by Hagi. Let’s hope it’s not too serious. 5

GLEN KAMARA: Horrifically booed by the children allowed into the stadium for tonight’s game. God only knows how that must’ve felt for the Finn. Harshly dismissed on 74 minutes for his second bookable offence for catching Sacek slightly with his elbow. His performance before then was generally composed but the booing must’ve had an impact on him mentally. Would’ve had no qualms if he and his teammates walked off the pitch. 6

FASHION SAKALA: Preferred to Alfredo Morelos to lead the line and started brightly, had a decent shot on goal after 13 minutes after being played in by Aribo. Great control on 41 minutes to control a long ball from Tavernier. Had the ball in the net but flagged offside on 47 minutes. Has to show more skill and composure when played in by Tavernier on 54 minutes. Played through on 61 minutes but just failed to get a touch on the ball to have an attempt on goal. Booked on 67 minutes for catching Celustka. Caught offside again in stoppage time when played in by Tavernier which is unacceptable at this level and needs to improve on his line reading massively. Worked hard but Rangers need more from him. 5

KEMAR ROOFE: Plugged away gamely but struggled to really impose himself in an attacking sense in the first half and aside from a great ball across goal on 50 minutes he was anonymous. 6

Substitutes

IANIS HAGI: Perhaps unfortunate not to start but was introduced on 37 minutes due to an injury sustained by Bacuna. Attempted a shot from distance on 72 minutes but no real venom in the strike and was easily saved. Didn't offer enough in an attacking sense. 5

ALFREDO MORELOS: Replaced Roofe on 65 minutes for his 50th European appearance for the club Struggled to make his mark and affect the game as he would’ve liked. Rangers missed his physical presence by not starting him. 4

JOHN LUNDSTRAM: Replaced Aribo on 77 minutes just after Rangers were reduced to 10 men. Couldn’t make much of an impression. 3
