Rangers boss Steven Gerrard's chances of being offered the Newcastle job have grown now that "ally" Frank McParland is set to take a key football advisory role for Amanda Staveley's consortium, according to The Times print edition.

McParland was previously Rangers' head of recruitment under Mark Warburton who described the former Liverpool talent scout as "the best in the business".

He departed with the Londoner after he left under disputed circumstances in 2017.

The paper states that McParland is "closely allied with both Gerrard and Rafa Benitez" and his position of power makes the Ibrox boss a more likely target for the Magpies.

Everton are said to be confident of keeping their newly appointed manager Benitez at Goodison despite potential interest from the newly minded Geordies.

McParland celebrated with other members of the consortium in a plush Jesmond hotel after the deal to wrest control from Mike Ashley was completed on Thursday.

His role will include a review of the club and implementing a new football structure to reverse decades of under-performance.
