STEVEN Gerrard believes Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos needs to be more selfish if he is to rediscover his best form and help the Ibrox club start killing opposition teams off.

Gerrard was frustrated at the number of scoring chances the Scottish champions failed to convert in their cinch Premiership match against Hearts in Glasgow on Saturday.

Morelos fired wide from just a few yards out after being presented with a gilt-edged opportunity to net by his team mate Kemar Roofe late on.

Gerrard, whose side remained a point ahead of their Tynecastle rivals at the top of the league table despite being held to a 1-1 draw, admitted the Colombian needs to do better.

“I don’t think he’s at his best,” he said. “But he’s still getting into the areas and he’s still getting chances. He must have had four or five.

“We need to maybe sharpen him up and get him to that next level and I’m sure the goals will come. But he’s certainly not at his outstanding best, that’s for sure.”

Gerrard added: “I don’t think it’s confidence. I think it’s that little bit of quality that’s needed. We know we’ve got the talent there. We know we’ve got the ability. Players like Roofe last year scored constant goals, Morelos too.

“Maybe two or three of them need to be that extra yard sharper when the chances come. Need to be that little bit more ruthless, that little bit more selfish when they come, just to kill teams off.”

Rangers dominated Hearts in the top-of-the-table encounter, but only John Lundstram, the English midfielder who netted from 25 yards out in the first-half, was able to score.

He added: “Craig Gordon has been very busy, he’s made some really good saves. But at the same time our finishing has got to be better, we’ve got to be more ruthless and take more chances.

“We’ve created 28 shots at goal. We’ve had a tap in to score, we’ve had an opportunity at one-v-one where we could even have gone around the keeper.

“So when you talk about the level of player here at Rangers you expect them to score more than one goal from what we created. We can’t keep creating 25, 26, 27 chances and only score one goal. That’s not enough.”
