STEVEN GERRARD says Rangers will be difficult to stop if they maintain the form showed in yesterday’s 4-2 win over Ross County.

Despite going behind again, the Light Blues rallied with goals from Joe Aribo, Ryan Kent, an Alex Iacovitti own goal and a Juninho Bacuna strike.

Derek Clark analyses what the Rangers boss had to say to the various media outlets afterwards.

Gerrard on the victory

“A lot of positives,” he told Rangers TV

“I thought Bacuna has come in today and put in a real top performance, Joe Aribo was at it, Ryan Kent scored a worldie goal, I thought Fashion’s performance was really selfless, a lot of hard work and running in behind.

"We looked really mobile and dangerous today, which is great and why we want fast players in those positions.

"Ten goals in two league games, we are entertaining our supporters and that is the main thing from a going forward point of view. We have just got to stop conceding these sloppy ones now.

"[The first goal] is offside. Very marginal but in my position I am always going to point a finger at that.

"Second one is sloppy but I have taken Leon Balogun off to protect him because we need him for the semi-final and with Fil (Helander) being injured he is so important.

"I am putting people in positions that they are maybe not fully up to speed with or strong in. so maybe I will take part of the responsibility for the second goal.

"But, in general, we need to stop conceding sloppy ones and get back to clean sheets and being tough to play against.

"If we do and we keep showing that quality going forward it will be difficult to stop."

As much as Gerrard says the first goal is offside, it’s a marginal call and without VAR in operation, you can see why the linesman hasn’t flagged. That being said it was another decent showing from the champions who now seem to be showing signs that they’re recapturing the form that saw them lift the title last season. Scoring 10 goals in two games is much more like it from Rangers but as Gerrard points out, the goals being conceded are still cheap and need addressed if the Light Blues are to break away from the chasing pack.

Gerrard on James Tavernier notching 100 assists

"James is a player who has got incredible moments, his numbers for a full-back are incredible.

"He has stepped up big for me on a lot of occasions since I have been in the door. I think winning last year has made him more determined and more hungry to go and build on that, I can see that determination in him. He needs to keep going, keep trying to get as many as he can.

"If he reminds me about the 100 assists, I will remind him that we are due a clean sheet so we will walk away both happy."

This was a great tongue-in-cheek line from Gerrard on Tavernier and it’s something Rangers fans have learned to accept since joining the club from Wigan six years ago. As much as his numbers going forward are outrageous, defensively he has been error-prone on occasions. That being said, you can’t fail but be in awe at his goals and assist rate, he’s often Rangers most likely attacking outlet which is staggering to think considering his position but huge credit must go to him for consistently producing.

Gerrard on Ryan Jack return

“I think it was a bit early for Ryan. He’s been out for seven months but I wanted to give him a boost and a bonus if you like because I know how hard he’s worked to get himself back.

“We need to get Ryan games behind closed doors in big spaces, 11 v 11 and try to get some minutes and some volume into his legs but I was hoping to get into a position where we could put him on.

“You just have to feel the energy and the applause in the stadium when he came on and that says everything about Ryan Jack because he plays for the supporters, he leaves everything out there on the pitch.

“The quicker we can get him up to speed and in a good place, this team will become stronger again because he’s a standard-setter, he pushes people around him and when he’s at it we know he’s up there with the best midfielder’s in this country.”

This was a welcome sight for the vast majority inside Ibrox on Sunday. Just simply for the player’s sake, it’s great to see Ryan Jack back on a football pitch again. Gerrard is spot on when he says he pushes people around him, it’s what Rangers have missed at points this season when the play has been pedestrian and, at times, boring and dull to watch. Jack is the type of player who will drive performance levels from his teammates and demand more, characteristics Gerrard displayed throughout his playing career which shows you why he admires him so much. If Rangers can get him up to speed then it’ll be a massive boost and will feel like a new signing, to use an old football cliché.

Gerrard on playing Nathan Patterson at left back

"Nathan Patterson needs to be put in different situations, different areas of the pitch. He has still got loads to learn, loads of growth, loads of evolving to do.

"I remember being around Nathan’s age under Gerard Houllier and I was playing left-back, right-back, holding role, left wing, right wing and it does you good for your development and growth. Receiving the ball in different areas of the pitch. I loved the way he was coming in and driving in and, who knows, we might need to use that at some point.

"Nathan can never say ‘you have never played me there before’. I have already done that and I will keep challenging him in different positions. He has played right-back, he has played as a seven and now he has played as a three as well. That will do him no harm at all."

This was an interesting sight and given Gerrard’s comments, we may see more of going forward. Nathan Patterson needs more game time, of that there is no question, he’s unfortunate he’s competing for a starting berth with one of the greatest Rangers right backs of the modern era but he has so much talent and ability he can be trusted to play different positions. With January looming, you’d imagine teams from the English Premier League will test Rangers resolve, hopefully, the 20-year-old remains at Ibrox to continue his development because he is going to be a truly special player.
