Former Rangers boss Steven Gerrard will miss his new side Aston Villa’s next two games after testing positive for Covid.

The Scouser has overseen a dramatic turnaround in the Birmingham team's form since arriving in the Midlands, winning four games and losing to only Manchester City and Liverpool by a single goal.

But he won’t be in the dugout when his side face Chelsea today nor Leeds United on the 28th amid the ongoing Omicron surge.

Gerrard has some experience after Covid red tape ruled him out two games as Rangers manager, including an Old Firm derby.

His side, with assistant Gary McAllister in charge, won the game 1-0 thanks to a Filip Helander header.

A Villa statement read: "Aston Villa can confirm Head Coach Steven Gerrard will be unable to attend our next two Premier League matches with Chelsea and Leeds United as he will be isolating after testing positive for COVID-19."
