RANGERS TV punditry duo Alex Rae and Shelley Kerr have questioned the decision to bring forward the winter break to follow today's Boxing Day fixtures.

The SPFL moved the scheduled winter break after calls from 10 of the 12 Scottish Premiership clubs, with Rangers are Ross County reportedly the two outliers.

It means the December 29 and Jnauary 2 matchdays have been postponed and rescheduled in a bid to avoid the 500-limit of capacity under Scottish Government curbs.

Rangers saw the match with Aberdeen rechseduled as well as their trip to Celtic Park which was moved from January 2 to February 2.

The new stadia rules state just 500 spectators can attend football matches before a three-week review of the restrictions.

And despite the fan limits, former SWNT boss Kerr insisted the matches should've been played keeping the winter break as scheduled.

Discussing the 'self-interest' in calls from clubs to move the break, Kerr explained: "I don't know what to say anymore. I just think the two game should've went ahead and then you reasses the situation.

"Last season we had to play wihtout fans for a long period of time and certainly it's proven the virus isn't going away any time soon.

"You don't know what the restrictions are going to be like so it's only two games. For me they should've played the two games and then reasses the situation.

"But it is what it is. The biggest problem as well is the governance of the game - the clubs are making the decisions so of course it's self interest.

"Every club has got its own reasons why they want to play or not want to play."

Speaking on Rangers TV she added: "It's only two games, why not play the two games. I can't see why we couldn't have played the two games and then go to the break.

"There is no guarantee that there won't be restrictions after three weeks so play the two games."

Fellow pundit on the Rangers TV broadcast Rae said: "Shelley, we are the only country who have a winter break who actually brought it forward and for me it makes no sense at all.

"We don't know what is round the corner we don't know what is down the line and to actually take they slots which were available to the football league you are running the risk of not being able to get games played further down the line."

Rae also blasted the Scottish Government limits on fan capacity as just 500 fans were permitted entry to Ibrox for the St Mirren match.

He fumed: "We are obviously going to touch on the whole situation which for me was a bit of a shambles really.

"There is obviously a small crowd in, it's one per cent of the fan base which is ridiculous for a stadium of this size.

"It's a disgrace that they've actually cut this down to 500. You can go to Stenhousemuir today and have 500 in there, which is a large percentage of the crowd.

"And there's one per cent of the fan base in here? It's an absolute disgrace."

Host Emma Dodds then drew attention to the numbers who could gather in a shopping centre just miles away despite the strict stadia rules.

And Rae went on to state the implementation of the rules to football was an "overreaction".

He said: "Well, without getting into too much politics, you can go and queue there, you have to wait, you have to travel on public transport to get there.

"These are all the reasons why the fan base who are not allowed here today so I think it was an overraction shall we say."
