CEDRIC ITTEN has reportedly been recalled from his Bundesliga loan spell by Rangers.

The Swiss striker, 25, had joined Greuther Furth for the season but it's claimed a January recall option has been activated by Rangers.

Itten is one of just three players with more than one goal for Furth this season with the club rooted to the bottom of the German top-tier table.

But he was reduced to just a spot on the bench in recent weeks before the New Year and has been recalled as a result of his limited game-time according to German outlet kicker.

He had made 12 appearances, scoring twice, during his time in Germany before his Ibrox return this month.

Kicker reports the early termination of the loan is a sensible decision claiming the striker had arrived as a "beacon of hope for the storm" before a shift in system by boss Stefan Leitl.

Explaining the issue with Itten's loan spell, the report read: "He's a penalty area striker with good finishing qualities, has to be served in the penalty area, but the shamrock came into this dangerous zone less and less recently and when it did, then via counterattack."

It remains to be seen what comes next for Itten after his return to Scotland with his Rangers deal in place until 2024.

His Ibrox return could present the opportunity to train under Giovanni van Bronckhorst for the first time, but it's not known whether the player or club see his future at Ibrox or elsewhere.

Itten had already played for Rangers this season before his loan exit in the summer meaning he's unable to be loaned out again.
