Pundit Charlie Nicholas reckons Allan McGregor hasn’t been himself and should have bowed out after securing last season’s title.

McGregor was at fault for two of Ross County’s three goals at the weekend and has come under scrutiny over his form this term.

Now 40, the keeper was understood to be considering his future prior to the summer but eventually signed a new deal.

And Nicholas is adamant that his displays have been way below the high expectations he's set for himself.

He told the Scottish Express: “It has been a season too far for Allan McGregor.

“I thought when Rangers won the title that was the time for him to bow out.

“I thought maybe Rangers might have given him a new deal with maybe a bit of coaching in there as well but not still to be No. 1.

“I really expected Rangers to sign another goalkeeper and he would get the gloves.

“McGregor has made too many mistakes this season and that is why I think it has been a season too far.

“He has been nowhere near close to good enough over the course of the campaign.

“McGregor hasn’t been up to his usual standards.

“He was at fault for a couple of the goals at Ross County and they were gifts.

“McGregor in normal circumstances would be dropped for this game.

“Yet Giovanni van Bronckhorst can’t take that risk.

“I know Jon McLaughlin has signed a new contract but I don’t think he can take that risk.”
