DEREK MCINNES has shared the hilarious moment he was nearly late for his Rangers debut - because of Ally McCoist's timekeeping.

With the pair staying in the same area, the Kilmarnock manager revealed they would often share a lift together for training and matchdays.

McInnes' debut came in a game against Partick Thistle at Ibrox.

Speaking on Open Goal, he told Si Ferry and Paul Slane how he had arranged to pick up McCoist prior to heading to Ibrox for the match.

And in his typically relaxed fashion, Super Ally nearly caused McInnes to be late.

The former Scotland star also had a brilliant witty quip about McInnes' driving to add into the mix.

McInnes explained: “He’s a bit more sensible now, but he’s still got his moments. We still golf and his a neighbour.

“Have you seen the size of Coisty’s house? Massive. He used to say: ‘My driveway’s that big I’ve got a wimpy in it’.

“I always remember my first game going to Ibrox. We were playing Partick Thistle on my debut.

“We were driving home on the Friday and Coisty said: ‘We’ll just go in together tomorrow?’ because he liked to have a pint after it.

“So, for pre-match we’d to meet at 11.30am so I told him I’d get him at 10.50pm. I was still sitting there at ten-past, quarter-past. I was s******g myself because I was going to be late for my first game.

“He comes swanning down with his papers, then he’s reading them and saying: ‘We’ve got plenty time’.

“So, I was driving to a looney – imagine being late on your first day.

“I hit a pothole and he goes: ‘Hawl, I’ll get somebody else to drive me in next week’. He says I only got an extra year because he got banned from driving.”
