DERMOT GALLAGHER has backed the VAR introduction in Scotland after yet another controversial weekend for the video technology.

The Sky Sports Ref Watch pundit appeared on-air this morning as he navigated his way through the big decisions from across the country.

One of the big calls from the weekend was Rangers' penalty away to St Mirren as they grabbed a point in Paisley.

Ryan Kent went down under the challenge of Marcus Fraser and referee Kevin Clancy flashed a yellow card at the winger for simulation.

VAR then stepped in and urged Clancy to review his decision on the pitchside monitor. The whistler then awarded a spot-kick and dismissed Kent's earlier booking.

Reacting to the decision on Sky Sports, Gallagher said: "I think the term I use often is the ball is a clue. The defender doesn’t get the ball. Is it a foul? Yes.

"Without the VAR that wouldn’t have been given. People say they brought it in half way and it’s not right, but do people want to see that continue to not be given or do they want to take the initiative and say ‘yeah, that’s a foul’."

Manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst was more frustrated at his team's lack of a goal threat throughout the 90 minutes.

He said: “We have to do that. We don’t score enough with the chances we have and in the end it damages us a lot.

“When we also defend like that and concede the first goal against us, we make it tough for ourselves.

“We had chances to score the first goal which means they will open up and give us more space. But when you come from behind, the spaces are smaller.

“We had one or two big chances. It was disappointing to drop points. We have to reflect and refresh and recover during the break.

“The weeks have been demanding weeks and we have to start against Hibs (after the break) at home so we have to be ready for that.”
