Rangers sacked Giovanni van Bronckhorst today after just 12 months at Ibrox.

The former Rangers player, who succeeded Steven Gerrard last November, has been let go halfway through his first term in charge, due to a recent string of bad results.

The team dropped points at home to Livingston and away to St Johnstone and St Mirren, which has left Rangers nine points behind rivals Celtic.

Assistant manager Dave Vos and coach Roy Makaay are also expected to leave the club.

In a statement released today, Douglas Park, Rangers chairman, said: “I want to thank Gio for the hard work he has put in over the last 12 months and, especially, the achievements of taking the club to the Europa League final and winning the Scottish Cup last season.

“Unfortunately, recent results have not met neither our nor Gio’s expectations, and we have taken this difficult decision today."

We took to the streets of Glasgow for the public's reaction to the Dutchman's sacking.

Rangers Review:

Robert Russell, 82, from Ibrox, said: "Brilliant news, he should have been sacked weeks ago.

"There are managers who have been sacked for less. No, I agree with this move.

"People say it's the players as well but the manager has to take the can here, I blame him.

"I never thought he had a good record anyway, they just picked him for his name, I think."

Rangers Review:

John MacKenzie, 71, from Whiteinch, said: "I'm sad for Gio. He did us a good job but his tactics haven't been working. I'm a season ticketholder and it's been a chore coming to the games.

"I hope he goes on to do well. I feel sorry for him but it's one of these things.

"I have no idea who could replace him, but I hope whoever it is makes tactics worthwhile watching."

Rangers Review:

John Byrne, 50, from Paisley, said: "I think this was definitely on the cards for him. We were losing too many games and suffering too many injuries.

"We just weren't competing with Celtic and at the end of that day, I think that's the reason he was shown the door.

"I think Michael Beale would be a good candidate to come back, he knows how to work the system and has done well with Queens Park Rangers.

"He would be a good addition to the team."

Rangers Review:

Alan Hutchison, 75, from East Kilbride, added: "They should have sacked him months ago.

"Hopefully now that they've sacked him, they've got someone to replace him. I wouldn't like to think that they've not got anyone to step in."

Alan also thought Beale would be a good choice as Rangers' new manager.

Rangers Review:

William Shaw, 38, from Glasgow, said: "I don't know who we can bring in next, but it's a shame it didn't work out.

"He's not going to be remembered for this, he did a lot, but this sacking was coming. Playing two midfielders and a striker in Scottish football doesn't work."

Despite agreeing with the outcome, William stated that he wishes Bronckhorst "all the best".

Rangers Review:

Dave Walker, 52, and Karen Walker, 44, Rangers fans from Middlesborough, had their say on the news.

Dave said: "You need heart and passion for Rangers, but Gio didn't have that. When you see Gerrard when we won games, he had so much passion, but Gio didn't."

Karen added: "This is the right time for it to happen because they have a couple of weeks now to get themselves sorted, get a new manager and get the morale up.

"Even the players have no morale anymore. The whole team has lost their passion and drive."

Karen would love to see Gerrard come back or Ally McCoist, though she admits it probably would "never happen".
