Steven Gerrard's penalty celebration is the talk of social media tonight after he was pelted with missiles following blasting his Liverpool Legends side into a 1-0 lead against Celtic legends.

The former Rangers boss was in charge of the Ibrox side as they halted their bitter rivals' charge for an historic ten titles in a row.

And when he opened the scoring in a 2-0 win, slotting past Artur Boruc, Gerrard made a beeline to celebrate in the corner of the pitch where Celtic fans were housed.

It prompted cups, shirts, plastic bottles and even what looked like beer bottles to rein down from the stands towards the 42-year-old former England captain.

In the studio, Liverpool TV commentator Peter McDowell and pundits Iain Stirling and Nigel Spackman, a former Rangers player himself, reflected on the viral moment.

Watching the footage of the penalty, comedian Stirling said: "His celebration was only going in one direction, and that direction was the Celtic fans."

McDowell asked: "Do you ever get the opportunity to turn the other cheek, even in retirement or was that too good an opportunity to turn down?"

Spakman retorted: "I was lucky enough to play her for Liverpool and at Anfield. Magnificent. Being at Rangers, the city of Glasgow where you're either a green or a blue, you have to get caught up in the whole thing of it. You live with that. Luckily when I was there, Rangers were the dominant side. I'd have hated for the shoe to be on the other foot. When Steven went to Rangers he did well but won the title in his third season. He's a hero at Rangers but that's why he's disliked by the Celtic half."

Stirling replied pithily: "In Glasgow he's loved by the blues. In Liverpool he isn't."

McDowell agreed: "That's very true. It was a good celebration all the same from Steven Gerrard's point of view."
