Barry Ferguson is hopeful that VAR won't be involved in the match between Celtic and Rangers as he pleaded for Kevin Clancy to be trusted with the big calls.

The former Ibrox midfielder reckons the official in the middle at Parkhead has more than enough experience to handle the occasion and referee the match appropriately.

However, Ferguson fears VAR could intervene over a mistimed tackle or misjudged header and change the game.

Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show, Ferguson said: "Let him referee the game tomorrow. Let him referee. He's an experienced referee.

"There is going to be a mistimed tackle or somebody coming in and misjudging a header and maybe a wee elbow in the back of the neck or whatever.

"But I think Kevin Clancy will realise that there's a lot lying on the game and I think he's got the experience to realise that.

"I just hope he's allowed to go and referee it himself, and hopefully VAR doesn't get involved."

Ferguson also stated the lack of transparency over VAR decision and discussions has left it appearing to fans to be acting like a "secret service".

A visual feed of VAR incidents is shown by broadcasters during matches with Sky Sports also being provided an audio feed from the VAR control room.

However, as Andy Walker stated in his controversial comments earlier this week, the broadcaster cannot hear any audio from the referee on the pitch.

Questioning the lack of transparency, Ferguson said: "It's like the secret service. You're not allowed to know anything."

Walker had claimed a referee had been informed the "easiest way out" would be an offside call during a match. He did not name the officials or clubs involved.

But Sky Sports apologised to the Scottish FA over the remarks and insisted Walker regretted his comments on the matter.
