Former Rangers boss Steven Gerrard is set for a shock return to British football with the Liverpool great the bookies' favourite to land the manager's gig at an English Championship side.

The former England internationalist, who guided the Ibrox club to its 55th league title in 2021, departed Govan for Aston Villa in November of that year before being dismissed by the Premier League outfit last October.

The 43-year-old has been out of work since and turned down an approach to manage in the Saudi Premier League earlier this week, but now Gerrard appears to be closing in on a return to management in English football's second tier.

Gerrard is currently 11/4 to be named as Sheffield Wednesday manager following Darren Moore's exit on Monday, and the former Gers boss is the favourite to get the gig.

Former Owls manager Carlos Carvalhal and ex-Wolves boss Bruno Lage are also in the frame but Gerrard is the early frontrunner to land the position, according to the bookies.

The Englishman was heavily linked with a job in Saudi Arabia earlier this week before he quashed those rumours on Tuesday.

He said: “There’s been a lot said, a lot of it’s not true. I was invited over there to look at a potential offer, which I did.

“I’ve been analysing that in the last few days. But where we stand now, I won’t be taking that offer up.”
