Steven Gerrard is closing in on the marquee signing of Jordan Henderson at Al-Ettifaq, according to reports.

It's claimed the former Rangers boss could land Liverpool captain Henderson as his first signing at the Saudi club.

Henderson, 33, has two years left on his Anfield deal but it's thought wages up to quadruple the amount he receives at Liverpool are on the table.

Reports have suggested a deal could exceed £500,000 per week for Henderson with an initial two-year contract with the option of a third.

Gerrard made his return to management in a shock move to Al-Ettifaq and managed his first match for the club in a 1-1 draw with Nogometni Klub in Croatia.

It's thought Gerrard will miss out on transfer target Wilfried Zaha with a reported £16million per season deal not enough to tempt the out-of contract winger.

But, The Athletic report Henderson is "leaning towards" accepting an offer from Al-Ettifaq.

A decision will reportedly be made "imminently".

Should Henderson accept a proposal then it's expected transfer negotiations would begin with Liverpool immediately with the Anfield club due a fee for their captain.

As of yet, Liverpool have not received a formal offer to sign Henderson.
