Kris Boyd insists Rangers should be looking to sign Lawrence Shankland this January window and he reckons he is better than anything the Ibrox club has in the striking department at the moment.

The Tynecastle frontman is currently the top goal scorer in the Premiership and just yesterday he was named player of the month.

Shankland is currently contracted at Hearts until 2025, but Boyd, who has been complimentary about the Scotland international in the past, believes his former side Rangers should be going all out to target the 28-year-old.

Asked on Sky Sports by Chris Sutton if Shankland is better than the current Ibrox striking department, Boyd responded: "Is he better than what is there? Yes.

"I would have signed him if I was Rangers.

"I was surprised that nobody was in for him over the summer. When you have a goalscorer, there aren't many of them going around.

"I think when you look at the money Rangers have been spending in that area, to have someone in the league, you know he can score goals.

"I am surprised they haven't had a go at getting him."

Sutton added: "Steven Naismith will want to share the goals around, but since he had the move from Belgium, he has been super prolific.

"He is a scorer of different types of goals. He had been on a poor run at the start of the season and people were questioning him.

"He has great awareness in and around the box and great composure too. He is a natural-born finisher.

"If Hearts create opportunities he will take them."
