Former Rangers boss Steven Gerrard is among the bookies' favourites to replace Jurgen Klopp, who today announced he will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season.

The 56-year-old has informed the club’s ownership of his decision to stand down, having taken charge at Liverpool in 2015.

Klopp has won six major trophies with the Reds, including the Premier League title in 2020 and the Champions League trophy the year before.

Liverpool legend Gerrard has now been named among the frontrunners to replace Klopp with bookmakers naming Xabi Alonso the early betting favourite.

Alonso, who has led Bayer Leverkusen to the top of the Bundesliga this season, is the current 13/8 market favourite with oddsmakers.

Current assistant manager Pep Lijnders is the second favourite in the market at 3/1, ahead of Gerrard, at 11/2.

Other names at the top of the betting to replace Klopp include Roberto De Zerbi (15/2), Julian Nagelsmann (9/1), Ange Postecoglu (14/1), and Luis Enrique (14/1).

Oddschecker’s Leon Blackman said: “Stunning news coming out of Liverpool today as Jurgen Klopp has announced he will leave the club at the end of this season.

"Bookies have begun to have their say on who will replace him and an early favourite has emerged. Former Liverpool legend and current Bayer Leverkusen manager, Xabi Alonso, is the 13/8 betting favourite amongst UK bookmakers.

"Roberto De Zerbi is another name who has picked up early betting traffic with us at Oddschecker, currently 15/2 to swap Brighton for Liverpool.”
