Davide Ancelotti considers Rangers move amidst manager timeline

The Rangers Review understands Ancelotti has held positive discussions over a potential move to Glasgow as he gets set to leave Real Madrid at the end of the campaign. And that could result in the 35-year-old becoming the next man tasked with bringing the Premiership title back to Ibrox. 

Ancelotti - the son of legendary Italian boss Carlo - has emerged as a key target for the incoming regime as Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises prepare to clinch a multi-million pound takeover deal in the coming weeks. It is believed that Ancelotti has other opportunities in several leagues ahead of the new campaign, but is attracted to the idea of succeeding interim manager Barry Ferguson this summer.

Talks between Rangers and Ancelotti’s camp have taken place and a decision is expected to be made by the end of the month. The Rangers Review understands that no contract has yet been tabled. If Ancelotti feels that Rangers is the right project for him to take his first step into management, then he will not wait for other clubs to table offers for his services this summer. 

The respected coach has worked with his father at Bayern Munich, Napoli and Madrid after first joining forces at Everton. Ancelotti senior will leave the Bernabeu to become the next boss of Brazil and Davide will now go out on his own for the first time in the dugout. 

Rangers sources insisted this week that the process was still at an early stage as Kevin Thelwell, the new sporting director, spearheads the search for the new manager. 49ers technical director Gretar Steinsson and Patrick Stewart, the chief executive officer, are also involved in the process.

Ferguson took charge of his final match at Ibrox on Wednesday evening as Rangers ran out 3-1 winners over Dundee United. His stint in interim charge will end against Hibernian at Easter Road on Saturday. 

“Yeah, there's always going to be speculation,” Ferguson said earlier this week after reports of interest in Ancelotti first broke in Italy and Spain. “In terms of the update on myself, look, that's going to remain private, but I'm sure you'll see over the course of the next few days. 

“Hopefully there's going to be a bit of movement because I've mentioned a number of times it has to get moving in terms of who's going to be the manager because of the pre-season coming up. There's players out of the contract, players going back on loan, etc, etc, etc. So hopefully in the next few days we'll be clear on what's going to be happening.”
