Cyriel Dessers is at the heart of a row after being criticised for his Nigeria performance by the Football Federation's own media team.

The former Rangers started striker started, and scored, as his national team drew 1-1 with South Africa to leave their World Cup qualification hopes hanging by a thread.

Despite scoring in the 44th minute, he was still hooked at half-time by manager Eric Chelle at half-time.

He was then heavily criticised in the Nigeria Football Federation's own match report.

It read: "Dessers had an unimpressive game in Uyo, where he turned out to be a substitute that was substituted, did not have a better game.

"He was too slow to latch onto passes, could not win aerial balls and did little in bringing alive the Nigerian attack."

Team-mate William Troost-Ekong was also targeted and blamed for his own goal that allowed South Africa to tie the match.

General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi distanced himself from the comments and says the federation didn't greenlight their publication.

He said: "I saw the release just like everyone else did. Nobody in the federation is happy with it.

"The NFF did not authorise that statement. We have great respect for all of the players. Blaming an individual for a result is unfair.

"When we win, it's a team victory. When we lose, it's also collective. No player should be singled out."
