Rangers are working to finalise a deal that would see them appoint Kevin Muscat as their new head coach.

The Australian won't be in the Ibrox dugout in time for this weekend's match against Dundee United, however, with under-19s boss Stevie Smith taking interim charge.

The game marks Rangers' return to action after the second international break of the season.

Including the most recent window, over the last five international breaks in the past 12 months, the club's players have returned to Auchenhowie to four different bosses.

In November 2024, they came back to Philippe Clement. In March 2025, Barry Ferguson was at the helm. After the summer break, Russell Martin was in charge. Now Smith is in situ.

Should he get the job, the players could then return to training after the upcoming November break to Muscat, meaning in six international breaks in the space of a year, Rangers' internationalists will have come back to their club to five different bosses.

The managerial merry-go-round at Ibrox over the past year has been quite something. Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises will be hoping Muscat is the long-term solution to Rangers' struggles.

Announcing that Smith will be in the dugout this weekend, a club statement read: "We can confirm Steven Smith, Brian Gilmour, Rhys Owen and Sal Bibbo will lead the men’s first-team for Saturday’s Scottish Premiership match with Dundee United."

Kick-off at Ibrox Stadium is at 3pm.
