Steve Clarke has explained why he gave Rangers youngster Findlay Curtis his first Scotland call-up for friendlies against Japan and Ivory Coast.

After starring on loan at Kilmarnock, the winger has been included in Clarke's pool for the double-header later this month, as the manager looks at his options for this summer's World Cup.

Curtis has already told of his and his mum's shocked reactions at the news he had made the cut for the senior squad.

Now, Clarke has explained why he took the decision to include the 19-year-old.

He said: "(Curtis) came into the Rangers team (early in the season). I like him. He's direct and likes to make things happen. I watched a little bit of him on videos and went to watch him live at the weekend where I thought he was decent.

"He is just another young one. Everyone keeps going on about me not evolving the squad but there is a natural evolution to any group of players.

"I have always tried to introduce young players when I feel it is the right time to introduce them and Finlay falls into that category at this moment in time."

Clarke says there is plenty of time for players to come in and out of contention for the summer.

He added: "A March squad where you preparing for a World Cup in the summer is always a little bit different. We've got some injuries, some players who are on the cusp of coming back from injuries and some players that I think I need to have a look at.

"A lot can change over the next 10 weeks so we have to be ready to cover all the bases."
