Ben Godfrey's arrival may not have generated the same excitement as Lawrence Shankland's return or Ross McCrorie's homecoming, but Rangers believe they have landed a player capable of adding something they desperately lacked last season.

That was the central discussion on this morning's Rangers Review briefing after the former England international completed his loan move from Atalanta. While acknowledging his career has stalled over the past couple of years, the panel felt Rangers have struck a sensible, low-risk deal by securing an option rather than an obligation to buy.

Godfrey's pace, athleticism and Premier League experience were all highlighted as qualities that could strengthen a defence which required major surgery this summer.

The conversation also turned to the wider rebuild under Derek McInnes. With McCrorie already through the door and more defensive additions expected, there was agreement Rangers are beginning to address the glaring lack of depth that existed at the back following the end of last season.

Attention also focused on several players facing pivotal campaigns. Lyall Cameron was identified as someone who could finally establish himself under McInnes after struggling for opportunities, while Bailey Rice's season-long loan to Kilmarnock was described as a make-or-break opportunity to prove he has a long-term future at Ibrox.

Thelo Aasgaard's encouraging performances for Norway at the World Cup were also discussed, although questions remain over whether his qualities translate consistently enough to Rangers.

Elsewhere, transfer speculation continued around a new goalkeeper and further reinforcements, with the panel stressing there is still plenty of work to do before McInnes has the squad he wants.

Godfrey may be only the third arrival of the summer, but if he rediscovers the form that once earned him England caps, Rangers could have pulled off one of the window's shrewdest deals.
