Rangers are closing in on Stuttgart winger Badredine Bouanani as Derek McInnes targets another attacking option on deadline day.

The 21-year-old Algerian international was having a medical on Thursday morning before a loan move to Ibrox. If completed, Bouanani would become Rangers’ 14th arrival.

Speaking on today's Rangers Review morning briefing, Jonny McFarlane said: “Rangers need another body in there, Derek. There's no doubt about that. It's another young lad.”

The potential signing comes as Rangers continue to shape McInnes’ squad, although its age profile remains a concern. Laurence Shankland, at 31, is the oldest player in the group.

McFarlane said: “There is an awful lot of young boys in this team. Derek was talking about it last night. He said we look young at times. They certainly do.”

Kevin Kelsy is expected to complete a move from Portland Timbers. Thelo Aasgaard has joined Anderlecht on loan, with a £6million option to buy.

Shankland scored twice in Rangers’ 2-1 victory over Falkirk and earned praise for a display McFarlane said showed the finishing the team had been missing.

McFarlane said: “That was the ultimate Kris Boyd-style performance, a striker stepping up and being deadly when it counts.”

Defensive concerns remain over Manny Fernandez’s inconsistency and the amount of experienced cover at centre-back.

McFarlane said: “I thought he was poor last night. More ridiculously flaky parts to his performance.”

He believes Rangers are showing signs of progress under McInnes, although the team remains “miles off where it needs to be”.
