Kenny Miller admitted he was thrilled to see his former team mate James Tavernier in a Maccabi Tel Aviv shirt after he made a winning debut.

And it was revealed the ex-Rangers captain will be the highest-paid player in Israeli football.

The 34-year-old helped Miller's team to a 4-1 win at Hapoel Beer-Sheva after cutting through red tape in time to make his debut.

Tavernier, who was at Rangers for 11 years, is reportedly on a £11,500-a-week one-year deal with an option for a further 12 months, which would make him the top earner in the country.

It's understood Tavernier's salary at Ibrox was over £35k per week.

Maccabi boss Miller was delighted to see the Englishman back in action.

He said: "We talked a lot in recent weeks and James wanted to try something new because he hasn't played abroad.

"The club worked very hard to make it happen and they got it done.

"You will see him play even better in a couple of weeks when he gets fully up to speed.

"The guys are only just getting to know him, but they have already accepted him.

"We scored four goals but could easily have scored six goals. It was a fantastic performance by the whole team."
