RANGERS got their Scottish Premiership campaign back on track in Dingwall yesterday after running out 4-2 winners over Ross County.

There were a number of talking points from the match itself as well as news that the Light Blues have rejected a reported £5m bid from Everton for Nathan Patterson.

Here’s what Gers boss Steven Gerrard said to the media afterwards.

"It was much more like us both in and out of possession," he told Rangers TV.

“I’m a lot happier today. As you can see quite clearly what we are trying to do.

“We are trying to be more organized at times and we are still trying to fine-tune that.

“We are still waiting to have a full squad and be fully settled so we will get better.

“I thought we showed a lot of quality today and we created a lot.

“James (Tavernier) had a good chance at the end and it could have been one or two more.

“Going forward we looked really dangerous. We have come away from home and got three important points which is the main thing."

The manager is right, it was more like Rangers but there were still areas of concern that will be a slight worry heading into two huge matches this week.

Again, he’s correct in mentioning that he’s still to have a full-strength squad to select from as that was one area Rangers were fortunate in last season when there didn’t appear to be too many injuries. This term, he’s had to contend with key players missing due to suspension, injury and covid issues so it has been far from ideal.

Rangers were streets ahead of Ross County yesterday, they never looked in danger of dropping points but the defensive lapses is an area you’d imagine Gerrard will be looking to “fine-tune” in the coming days.

The manager was also quizzed on Joe Aribo’s goal and his overall contribution:

“Joe was a little bit frustrated through the week but that is what Joe Aribo is all about. Driving up to people, being aggressive, breaking the rules.

“It was a fantastic finish and we want him to keep doing that, scoring goals and he has got the license when we name that midfield three to go forward and be a bit more ambitious.

“I still think we can be better and go on and get five or six, that is how I want my teams to play, I want them to be organised and hard to play against, that is the base.

“We want to be as ruthless in the box as we can be and that is what a Rangers team should look like.”

It was an exquisite strike from one, if not the, most skilful player in the country. Joe Aribo often frustrates supporters as they know he is capable of producing extraordinary moments of brilliance but consistency has been an issue for him.

Adding more goals to his game is something he and the coaching staff will be hoping for. We often heard the term ‘relentless’ used last season as the Light Blues scored goals for fun and powered past the opposition and he must begin to live that mantra. Gerrard’s comments point towards him wanting this same level of intensity in the forward areas. After netting 92 league goals last season, the manager will no doubt want to match or better that stat and by using phrases like "break the rules" suggests he wants players like Aribo to attempt more trickery and avoid playing safe.

The other major talking point focused on a £5m bid from Everton for Nathan Patterson that was rejected.

Gerrard denied any knowledge of the offer being placed and subsequently joked it was nowhere near his true value.

When asked about it by Heart and Hand's Martyn Ramsay, Gerrard responded:

“You carry on with the jokes, £5million, wow"

“Look, I’ve only just been told about this. It hasn’t been brought to my attention by anyone whose above me at the club.

“I’ll ask the question when I go back on the bus but if you’re going to talk about Nathan Patterson you need to get real.

“£5m is, I don’t know, that’s definitely come out of a joke book surely.

“I don’t make the decisions in terms of when the right numbers are hit. All the players have got a price, we’ve said this so many times. We want to keep all our best players especially our home grown and local ones. There’s a big future here for him he’s got to be patient and he’ll get game time and minutes.

“We’re delighted with Nathan, he’s not someone we’re looking to move on but every single person has got a number. But let me tell you now £5m is so far away it’s unreal.”

This is an interesting one. Normally if you receive a bid like this for a fringe player it would represent good business but everyone can see that Patterson is a special talent that is only going to improve and thus increase his value.

The problem Rangers have is they already possess the best right back in the country and he also happens to be the skipper so getting Patterson game time is an issue Gerrard has to work out.

Having watched Everton against Leeds at the weekend, Patterson would fit right into the Toffees side but there is no chance of them getting him on the cheap.

Don’t be surprised if they come back in before the 31st of August with an improved bid and, if upwards of £10m, Rangers will have to seriously consider it.

Why?

Well, they need to sell someone. The model they are operating is based on the fact you buy low and sell high but nobody has left Ibrox for big money yet.

Selling Patterson would be a blow but it wouldn’t affect the strength of the starting XI and therefore if a more realistic offer were to be put to the Rangers board, it is something you would imagine they would seriously consider.
