Jonny Mcfarlane's reaction at the final whistle after an amazing 4-2 win for Rangers in Dortmund

Lyon revisited

A 0-3 win in France back in 2007 was a truly surprising result given the Ligue 1 side were then regular performers in the last eight of the Champions League and dominant in their own country. Walter Smith’s men were thrawn at the back and quick on the counter and in many ways mirrored what we saw tonight. The key difference is that Rangers rode their luck 15 years ago. Tonight they were by far the better side, looking like they could score at will almost every time they broke forward. This was more smash than smash n grab in a remarkable victory that will always be remembered.

Electricity flows through the attack

It’s hard to single out individuals on a night a team stood so tall but Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent in particular were on their very best form, tormenting the Dortmund defence. Matts Hummels will be seeing Buffalos in his nightmares for weeks to come while the English winger terrified the life out of Zagadou every time he touched the ball. A double is the least the Colombian deserved as he continues to show stunning development under the management team. While he’s often excelled in European competition, he’s now looking a complete player.

Ryan Jack rolls back the years

There were some voices who wondered if Jack's Rangers career might have run out of steam amid long-term injury woes. While it hadn't quite got to the "7-10 days" Jordan Rossiter stage, his comebacks have been marred with frustrating setbacks. And yet he's come back carrying the assurance and class of a true Rangers player in the traditional sense. Gordon Strachan always talked about having 'men' and 'good teammates' when he was Scotland Manager and Jack exudes that energy. He is always there to take the ball or to offer an angle, doing the dirty work artfully. Tonight, he was everywhere, the beating heart.

Van Bronkhorst gets it right

He was rightly under major pressure after the defeat by Celtic but the manager has shown great leadership in guiding a remarkable bounce back. Defeating Hearts 5-0 was a statement but tonight was on another level entirely. The game plan was aggressive as Rangers looked to get after Dortmund, pressing the life out of them. It was a gamble by the manager but it paid off in spades. He’s now presided over arguably the finest away win in the club’s history and given the fans a night they will never forget. There’s also the small matter of being in the driving seat to qualify for the last 16 of a tournament littered with top sides.
