We assess the players' performances in a hard-fought match in Germany.

Allan McGregor: Never had a save to make in the first half as Rangers were organised and defended robustly. Nkunku stung the gloves of the 40-year-old from the edge of the area on 53 minutes in what was his first proper save of the game. Rounded by Nkunku on 69 minutes but he’ll be thanking his lucky stars after he ballooned the ball over. Should’ve came out and collected a cross ball on 79 minutes but fortunately, Nkunku nodded over at the back post. Great acrobatic save to tip an Adams strike over but just seconds later he had no chance as Angelino volleyed into the corner from the resultant corner. 7

James Tavernier: Terrific block to deny an Angelino strike after a Bassey slip. Great tenacity and drive to win a ball on 32 minutes but he had no out-ball and was eventually dispossessed. Just a fraction away from a tap in when Kent drilled a shot wide four minutes after the restart, the skipper kicked the post in frustration as he knows it was a big chance. Was furious with Kent when he drove forward on 77 minutes and looked for an out-ball. Harshly booked for a sliding challenge deep into injury time. 7

Connor Goldson: Another brilliant showing from Rangers Mr Dependable. He, like others, started nervously though and was guilty of a poor ball forward which flew out of play on six minutes. Great sliding challenge on Laimer to prevent a shot on goal on 18 minutes. Took a sore one to the head from Halstenberg when he connected with a Barisic corner on 29 minutes. 7

Calvin Bassey: Brilliant block to deny Nkunku following a Barisic mistake on 16 minutes. Was on the receiving end of van Bronckhorst’s wrath for a ball inside to Kamara on 21 minutes that put the Finn in trouble but fortunately, he received a free-kick. Tremendous recovery tackle on Olmo on 65 minutes on the halfway line. Brilliant burst forward to carry the ball up the pitch when Rangers were under the cosh midway through the second half. Solid performance. 8

Borna Barisic: Nearly sold the jerseys on 16 minutes with a poor header that saw an opportunity present itself to Nkunku but Bassey saved the day. Leipzig got a bit of joy down the Croatian’s side in the first half but carried out the game plan well. 7

Ryan Jack: Good battling to win the ball just outside his own penalty area before being clipped and winning a free kick on nine minutes. Great ball-winning to nip the ball of Nkunku who tried to roll Bassey on the edge of the box on 57 minutes. Poor touch in a vital area when Rangers were in Leipzig’s final third that resulted in the home side breaking away themselves. Fired over from long range on 78 minutes when keeping possession was the better option. Put in a shift and can be pleased with his performance. 7

John Lundstram: Deployed as the middle man in a back three and was relatively composed and defensively sound although he was caught under a lofted ball early on but straight a the resultant header never tested McGregor. Got wrong side of Nkunku midway through the second half as he rounded McGregor but amazingly the Frenchman blazed over with the goal at his mercy. 7

Glen Kamara: Kept things simple and moving and won a number of important free-kicks by doing well to get his body in the way of the ball. 7

Ryan Kent: Was Rangers most creative outlet. Won a free kick on the edge of the area with quick feet to deceive Adams. Lovely footwork just before the break to weave past two Leipzig players and open play up. Fired just wide in a rare Rangers attack on 49 minutes after good skill to create the angle for the shot. Superb tracking back and turn to win a free kick off Laimer and take the heat off the Light Blues backline. Should’ve done better later when Aribo found him in the box but he was crowded out. Tested Gulacsi with a curling effort from the edge of the box after cutting inside. 7

Joe Aribo: Moved into the false nine position at the start of the second half and brought Rangers some joy almost immediately as he played in Kent for Rangers first real chance of the game. Just moments later he did well to nod the ball down for a Tavernier strike that deflected over the bar for a corner. Hard task for the Nigerian tonight but he battled well. 7

Scott Wright: Perhaps a surprise inclusion ahead of Fashion Sakala. A big night for the forward but unfortunately he looked overawed throughout. Turned into trouble on seven minutes losing possession on the halfway line and was guilty of losing possession cheaply on several occasions either with a poor choice of pass or being too slow to react. Copped a sore one from Olmo midway through the first half but carried on. Won the first corner of the game on 29 minutes, more so through luck more than anything else but a relatively poor display and no surprise to see him replaced by Sakala. 4
