WITH the start of the season just under four weeks away, there are a growing number of supporters becoming restless at the lack of new faces being paraded at Ibrox.

John Souttar aside, the only summer acquisitions, to date, have been a handful of talented teenagers for the Rangers B Team. However, the Rangers Review understands the club is working hard behind the scenes on a number of targets, the majority of which have, so far, not been made public.

One player who should team up with Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men soon is Croatian striker Antonio Colak. At the time of writing, the PAOK man has agreed personal terms while the asking price of £1.8m has also been met. The hold-up stems from the Greek side wanting to acquire a replacement before allowing the 28-year-old to depart. They only have two established strikers and understandably don't want a scenario where Colak heads out the door and main man Nélson Oliveira does his cruciate in the next training session.

Rangers Review:

As is the norm when it comes to transfer windows, the rumour mill is rampant and Rangers are at the centre of a bigger storm than most. Over the course of the weekend, two names that are well known to the club were mooted as potential targets. Like Alan Smith in days gone by, Aberdeen midfielder Lewis Ferguson is one player who seems destined to be linked with a move to Govan every transfer window. Understandable perhaps, given his family history but I’m reliably informed, as talented a player he may be, he has never been on the radar of the Rangers scouting department and that hasn’t changed.

Ellis Simms is another name that has been linked with Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men in recent days. The Everton youngster caught the eye when he spent the second half of last season on loan at Hearts where he scored seven times in all competitions. Powerful and pacey, it's clear he's a kid with some talent. Indeed, the Jambos are said to be keen on obtaining the 21-year-old’s services for the upcoming season. Rangers are not understood to be actively pursuing his signature.

There is still a long way to go before the window shuts on the 1st of September but the club are involved in monumental matches before then with the Champions League qualifiers at the start of August. It’s imperative to go into those ties with as strong a squad as possible. You’d like to think lessons will have been learned from last year when Steven Gerrard’s men bowed out at the first hurdle when a Colak-inspired Malmo disposed of the Ibrox men.

With the team touching down in Portugal today for their pre-season training camp culminating in a friendly with Sunderland, you’d ideally want your new signings on the plane.

However, as we all know, football isn't quite as simple as that. With little movement in the transfer market in the main, you may find a lot of deals being carried out in a domino effect as we edge closer to the window slamming shut.

There's no getting away from it, for Ross Wilson this is a vitally important few weeks. The stakes are high and his Rangers legacy may well hinge on who he can persuade to join or indeed stay before the Champions League qualifiers get underway.
